Female Football Focus 2020: Kate Horne (Connah’s Quay Nomads)

Kate is the niece of former Everton and Wales legend Barry Horne, as well as the daughter of Darren Horne, who played in 182 Welsh Premier League matches across spells at Flint Town United and Holywell Town.

This season has seen Connah’s Quay Nomads enter the senior women’s football scene and the likes of Kate has helped the team make a flying start, which includes reaching the Welsh Cup semi-finals at the first attempt.

Unfortunately, Kate has suffered injury problems in recent months and is currently on the sidelines, but she hopes to return and is also keeping busy studying to become a physiotherapist.

Football is in the family and I always remember watching my dad play every Saturday and helping out as a ball girl. Although, with my dad being an Arsenal fan, I am not sure he appreciated me wearing my full Manchester United kit.

Most memorable game played in

All international games are special memories. I have a lot of memorable memories from my former club of 11 years Tranmere Rovers, FA Cup ties with Tottenham, Hull, Sheffield United and many more. Winning leagues and losing them!
But my biggest memory has to be my first game for the firsts at Tranmere . I was 15/16 years old and it was a league game away at Middlesbrough. One of those where you had to be there.

I wouldn’t say there has been an obvious one. If you believe in your own team’s ability you are in with a shout

Biggest influence in football

I had a fantastic coach as a kid, Trevor Dutton. He inspired me at a young age and I carried that with me throughout my playing years.

Thoughts on Nomads’ first season to date

I joined the Nomads to help with my personal development after a big Injury. It was an easy decision to join the club. The girls in the squad are fantastic and the atmosphere is always positive and fun. This team has the ability to storm up the Welsh leagues and challenge in all cup competitions.
Sara Hilton was also another reason why I joined the club. I have huge respect for Sara and her achievements both as a player and coach. None of the above would be possible without her.
I am proud to have been one of the Nomads originals and would like to thank the girls, Sara and Cass for making my experience enjoyable.

Player to watch in Nomads squad

Jasmin Dutton has always been one to watch. Rachel Nattrass is also another important player within the squad.

Personal football ambitions

I unfortunately re-injured my knee (ACL) and will be having another operation in the next few months, leaving me unsure of my playing future. It will always be in my heart to play, and that’s what I will aim for.
