Women’s football: Welsh Cup joy for Nomads and Bethel, Amlwch hit six in league, WPL gloom for Llandudno

FAW WOMEN’S Welsh Cup round two

Denbigh Town 3 Connah’s Quay Nomads 8

Kate Horne and Lani Bouckley both grabbed hat-tricks as Connah’s Quay stormed into the FAW Women’s Welsh Cup quarter-finals with an emphatic victory at Denbigh.

Although Sara Hilton’s side are a division below Denbigh in the North Wales League, it was the Deesiders, in their debut season as a team, who certainly got the better of things in this second round clash.

Shannon Hobbs scored first for Quay on seven minutes before Horne added another soon after.

Candice Nellist, Bouckley and Horne again also struck before half time.

In the 50th minute, Bouckley grabbed her second, then Horne quickly completed her treble from the penalty spot.

Bouckley, on her return to action after suffering a shoulder injury in the first game of the campaign, notched her third in the 56th minute.

Chelsea Williams (2) and Rosie Hughes’ 17th goal of the season provided the Denbigh responses.

Nomads now host Welsh Premier side Port Talbot in the last eight.

Rhyl 3 Bethel 4 (aet)

Ffion Williams scored three times for a Bethel outfit which deservedly progressed at Belle Vue.

Rhyl just about shaded a tight first half and led at the break courtesy of a sharp finish from Niomi Taylor.

After the turnaround Bethel were a different proposition, Williams twice using her pace to fire the visitors in front.

Against the run of play, Taylor made it 2-2 to force extra time.

Bethel were much the stronger in the added half-hour, Williams completing her hat-trick before Erin Maloney stretched it to 4-2. A late consolation reply from Sophie Haywood could not change the outcome.

Bethel now make the daunting trip to Swansea City in the quarters.

North Wales Women’s League Division Two

Penrhyn Bay 1 Amlwch Town 6

Ffion Owen registered her fourth hat-trick of the season as Amlwch moved four points clear at the pinnacle with a 6-1 triumph at Penrhyn.

Owen struck three times for the unbeaten Anglesey side, while Cerys Gadd added a double and Shannon Thomas also made the scoresheet.

That also made it 14 goals this season for former Caernarfon Town skipper Owen.

Molly Watkinson proved Bay’s consolation goal.

Welsh Premier Women’s League

Cyncoed 8 Llandudno 1

A day to forget in the WPWL for Llandudno as they crashed 8-1 at Cardiff-based Cyncoed.

Stacey Tradewell’s long range net-finder was the only highpoint of the day for the Seasiders.
