One of the finest results in North Wales women’s football history saw rank outsiders Nomads knock a Port Talbot side two tiers above them in the pyramid out of the Welsh Cup.

In just their 11th competitive match since forming this season, Sara Hilton’s team came from behind to see off vastly experienced opponents currently lying fourth in the Welsh Premier Women’s League.

Nomads, who are third in North Wales Women’s League Division Two, played their hearts out in atrocious weather at Quay Leisure Centre’s 3G pitch to reach the semi-finals of the premier national competition against all the odds.

Talbot took a 30th minute lead via a Lauren Amor penalty, but close to the break, top-scorer Candice Nellist broke through the Port defence to slot home from 12 yards for her 14th goal of the season.

Early in the second half, the hosts edged in front when recent signing from NFA, Becca Bannister, received the ball when the visitors tried to clear from a corner and drilled home a powerful low strike.

After that, Port piled on the pressure but Nomads defended heroically with keeper Rhonwen Wilde, who joined the club as an outfield player but has been playing as a stand-in stopper due to an injury to the regular No1, producing some fantastic saves.

Manager Hilton could not have been more proud after the match, saying: “We knew what we were up against; we were playing against a team that were two-tiers above us with a wealth of experience in the women’s top tier in Wales.

“I couldn’t have asked for any more from the players, they were fantastic, their desire and determination until the last second – I couldn’t fault it at all.

“We were aware we were the underdogs, I think people expected Port Talbot to run away with it at times. We’re a brand new team so we’ve had to play in the third tier so it’s a case of making sure that doesn’t really define us as who we are as a club.

“We didn’t really change much today, how we looked to play. We tried to get the ball down and play through different units; it was a great fixture and a great result for us.”
