Running news: Nick Beer race blown out by Storm Ciara

Co-organiser of the Nick Beer 10k Kay Hatton said the weather was so bad there was no alternative but to cancel

Storm Ciara was the only winner last Sunday, as the annual Nick Beer 10K race around the Great Orme fell victim to the appalling weather.

Severe gusts of 70 mph made the event too dangerous to contemplate for more than 700 visiting runners.

Race organisers John and Kay Hatton from North Wales Road Runners confirmed: “On Saturday, after a worsening weather forecast, it was decided to postpone the event.

“The club is looking to re-schedule the race and Welsh Athletics have already confirmed that the race licence will be re-issued. We hope to announce a new date early next week, and all participants will be emailed.”

*The Conwy junior parkrun was also cancelled on Sunday morning with a weather warning posted online, saying that ‘high winds offer a risk to safety.’

There were 10 North Wales Road Runners among the 240 finishers at last Saturday’s Conwy Parkrun with seven members winning their age categories and two recording excellent personal best times.

Mark Jessett was the first club athlete back home again in 4th place overall, and 1st in his VM30 cat in 18.30, but pride of place must go to newcomer Rich Eccles, who claimed his third consecutive PB, and another MV50-55 cat win in 18.38.

Harry Driscoll continued his steady form, finishing 7th and was 1st SM18-19 winner in 19.23, with Stuart Culverhouse achieving a new PB in 20.20, and was 3rd VM45. Steve Roberts ran very well again and topped his VM55 age cat in 21.01, finishing 16th overall.

Carla Green was the 2nd female runner home and 30th overall in 22.09 but she won her VW45 age cat amidst a long run training session. Veteran Don Hale finished in 50th place and was 1st MV65-69 in 23.55, with Kay Hatton 2nd VW55 and 6th female athlete in 24.19.

Helen Hannam

Helen Hannam was another long-distance runner, who utilised the parkrun as part of her own extensive marathon training, and she too won her VW 40-44 age category as 9th female runner, and 82nd overall in 26.31, whilst Mike Hayton made a rare but welcome parkrun appearance, finishing in 85th place overall, and was 2nd MV65-69 runner in 26.40.

Dolgellau

Vicky Taylor took part in the Dolgellau Parkrun and won her VW45-49 age category, finishing as 2nd female athlete and was 7th place overall in 25.43.

Jon Evans improves his half-marathon time

Jon Evans

Jon Evans competed in the Victoria Park Half-Marathon last Saturday and improved on last week’s performance over the same distance by finishing in 1.52.40.
