Grassroots North Wales chooses its 15 top football images of 2019

An unforgettable still from North Wales football history……

Grassroots North Wales would be nothing without the amazing contributions of a team of photographers who supply us with fantastic pictures all year round.

Here are 15 of the very best we have featured in 2019 – but being honest, if I had more time, I could have come up with a top 50.

Huge thanks to everyone who provides photographs for us. Your assistance is more appreciated than you will ever know.

15 Lewis Connor heads home for Cemaes Bay in a 9-0 Lucas Oil Cup win at Holyhead Town Reserves (Edryd Jones – Nov 2, 2019)

Edryd Jones gets to shoot plenty of goals as he covers Cemaes Bay matches. Here, he captures Lewis Connor timing his jump perfectly to head home.

14 Corey Sinnott breaks forward for Gwalchmai against Pwllheli (Wynne Evans – October 12, 2019)

The determination on Corey Sinnott’s face is clear as he bursts forward for Gwalchmai against Pwllheli. Wynne Evans, who usually covers Trearddur Bay Bulls, was at Maes Meurig for this game which Gwalch won 3-1, Corey scoring twice. It’s not always easy to grasp this sort of front-on photo but Wynne does the business as usual.

13 Intense goalmouth action as Caernarfon Town defend against Airbus (Andrew Lincoln – August 30, 2019)

Andrew Lincoln is always razor sharp when it comes to getting goalmouth shots. Airbus are on the attack here, but they eventually lost this game 3-2

12 Bangor City apply the pressure against Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (Andre Pepper of Eventphoto Wales – October 5, 2019)

Some great facial expressions here as Andre Pepper gets close to the action. Andre of Eventphoto Wales is well known and respected for his coverage of sport in the Bangor area. City won this particular game against Llanrhaeadr 3-2.

11 Denbigh Town defend for their lives against FC Queen’s Park (Stephen Whitfield – October 26, 2019)

Denbigh keeper Antoni Sarnowski punches clear under pressure as Queen’s Park attack. Look at defender Moses Barnett caught in mid-air protecting his goal-line. Another classic shot from Stephen Whitfield. Denbigh won this FAW Trophy tie 2-1.

10 No holds barred as two Holywell women challenge NFA striker Amy Webster in the air (Lee Douglas – pre season 2019/20)

Anyone who has ever dared doubt that women ‘go for it’ as much as the men on the football field only need check out this competitive action from Holywell v NFA. Lee Douglas captures the moment perfectly.

9 Lexi Crawley scores the winner for Ynys Môn women in the Inter-Island Games semi-final against Jersey (Dai Sinclair – June 19, 2019)

Great piece of work from Dai Sinclair. He catches the ball as it leaves Lexi’s boot and then snapped a few other frames before the shot dipped in under the bar. The most famous goal in Ynys Môn women’s football history to date and Dai was right there to capture it.

8 Hectic goalmouth combat as Nefyn aim to block out a Trearddur Bay Bulls attack (Wynne Evans – November 9, 2019)

All the drama as Trearddur Bay Bulls and Nefyn (blue and white stripes) go for it at Lon Isallt. Wynne Evans caught some tremendous goalmouth action in this Gwynedd League battle which ended 2-2.

7 Coedpoeth United and Gresford Athletic go hard at it in the Welsh Cup (Chas Rowland – October 19, 2019)

Before this season I’d always known Chas Rowland as the Huws Gray Alliance League secretary. This season I’ve been fortunate to receive some of his great match photos for the website. Thanks a million Chas – here’s one of your best from Coedpoeth v Gresford which the Colliers won 5-0. Check out the intenseness on the players’ faces.

6 That perfect moment caught on camera as Ryan Wignall scores for Connah’s Quay Nomads at Kilmarnock with a cracking header (Nik Mesney – July 18, 2019)

Right place, right time, right result. Nik Mesney of NCM Media displays his professional class by catching Ryan Wignall’s header at Rugby Park at the point of impact. Wignall scored, Nomads won 2-0 to seal a 3-2 aggregate win and secure one of the Welsh Premier’s greatest feats in Europe.

5 Paul Scholes bang on target as Holyhead Hotspur Reserves defend their goal at Bro Goronwy in the NWCFA Junior Cup (Paul Scholes – October 5, 2019)

What a cracker! Holyhead Hotspur (blue and white stripes) are prepared to do everything possible to stop Bro Goronwy from scoring. Great work from Paul Scholes, Bro’s wonder man who has done just about every job there is to do at the Anglesey club. Bro won this cup tie 5-3.

4 Paul Evans captures one of THOSE unique moments at Barry Town United v Caernarfon Town (Paul Evans – Sep 7, 2019)

One of those once in a lifetime pictures for Caernarfon Town media officer Paul Evans. On first view, it appears a fiendishly smiling Gareth Evans has boosted his Barry opponent into orbit! Of course what probably occurred is the Barry man leaped up trying to block Evans’ cross. Brilliant optical illusion though.

3 Amazing close-up of Conwy Borough keeper Ben Heald saving a penalty at Llandudno (Aled Jones – Sep 7, 2019)

Aled Wyn Jones got so close to the moment when Ben Heald produced a tremendous penalty save at Llandudno, the Anglesey-based photographer was almost in a position to make the save himself! Brilliant, back-page stealing shot of a memorable event in a match Ben’s team Conwy Borough went on to win 1-0.

2 Liam Morris equalises for Ynys Môn in the Inter-Island Games final against Guernsey (Dai Sinclair – June 21, 2019)

An iconic image is secured forever seconds after Liam Morris brilliantly volleys home Ynys Môn’s leveller in the 2019 Inter-Island Games Final at Holyhead. Dai Sinclair at his very best.

1 Mel McGinness blasts in the winner for Ynys Môn in the 2019 Inter-Island Games final (John Elfryn Owen – June 21, 2019)

Llannerchymedd lens legend John Elfryn Owen said it was a fluke that he was in the perfect spot to catch Mel McGinness’s late winner in the Inter-Island Games final. It is an image that will go down in history for eternity. McGinness fires home in typical deadly fashion and seconds later that massive crowd behind him went delirious. Congratulations Elfryn – and Mel!
