Llanfairfechan Town are no strangers to big cup ties!

Former Prime Minister David Lloyd George kicks off the 1929 Welsh Amateur Cup semi-final between Llanfairfechan Town and Cardiff Corinthians

This Saturday’s NWCFA Junior Cup second round tie between Bangor 1876 and Llanfairfechan Town is certainly a big occasion for both teams, but it is highly unlikely a former Prime Minister will be performing the kick-off duties!

That was the case, however, 90 years ago for Llanfairfechan when they hosted Cardiff Corinthians in another massive game – the semi-final of the Welsh Amateur Cup at the former Bryn-y-Neuadd ground.

Just over 10 years on from leading Britain to victory in World War 1, former Prime Minister David Lloyd George, who had grown up in Llanystumdwy, North Wales, was guest of honour at the game, and in unusual circumstances for a football match, kicked off the proceedings from the centre spot.

A Llanfairfechan Town FC spokesman said on the club’s Facebook page: “Fechan unfortunately lost the game 4-1 to the Corinthians, who then went on to win the Amateur Trophy.

“But what we found interesting regarding this game is that you can see from the photographs the amount of people that were at pitchside.

“Many people claimed that all four touchlines were filled with local people to watch the Fechan and also to catch a glimpse of the special guest (David Lloyd George).

“We may be a small club, but we have a rich history when it comes to the beautiful game.

“Hopefully this weekend our current squad of players can create some history of their own to look back on and overcome the well-supported Bangor 1876.”

Saturday’s tie kicks off at 2 pm at Bangor 1876’s Treborth ground.

It is just a short trip for Llanfairfechan, who are expected to take a good number of supporters to the game hoping to see the team pull off a notable victory in the 90th anniversary year of the famous Lloyd George semi-final.
