Female Football Focus: Ruby McGilloway (Holywell FC Girls and Ladies)

There are many famous songs with Ruby in the title….

Ruby Tuesday by the Rolling Stones, Ruby Baby by Donald Fagen (ex-Steely Dan), Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town by Kenny Rogers and, of course, simply Ruby by the Kaiser Chiefs.

On searching, however, there do not appear to be too many well-known footballers named Ruby. That’s not the case at Holywell FC Girls and Ladies, though.

Ruby McGilloway will go down in history as the first-ever player to score a goal for the Wellwomen in the North Wales Women’s League – and she aims to get many more.

Away at Mountain Rangers. I scored Holywell ladies’ first ever goal (despite losing 14-1 haha). We were all still buzzing! I’ll never forget it

Scored by megging Llanberis’ keeper and half of my team piled on me celebrating

Football background

Well I’ve actually played netball most of my life not football, but I played for Holywell when I was younger, then Prestatyn ladies for half a season about three years ago, and now I play for Holywell ladies so this is my first proper season playing football

Strengths to your game

Fast sprints up the wing

Weaknesses

Turning up to games hungover from the night before! So I always get cramp from being dehydrated

Not an individual but Connah’s Quay Nomads, all very fast and skilful players

My mam and dad. Whenever my head goes down or I’m tired on the pitch, I look at them on the side and they give me the motivation I need. They don’t stop shouting and encouraging the team all game

Not played many away games yet, all haven’t been in great condition if I’m honest so looking forward to visiting a few more this season

Just to score more goals, hopefully get a hat-trick one game

I barely ever watch films because I get bored easily and can’t sit still for that long haha but most recent favourite film is A Star is Born
