FAW Trophy: Cefn Mawr Rangers cause big upset, Llay hit nine, 1876 long winning run is over

Cefn Mawr Rangers 2 (Blackwell 13, C Roberts 75)

Cefn Mawr Rangers from Division One of the Welsh National League caused the upset of the FAW Trophy third round with a 2-0 victory at Greenfield.
Goals from Aron Blackwell on 13 minutes and substitute Chris Roberts after 75 secured a giant-killing for the Wrexham area side at the expense of tough opponents from Welsh Alliance Division One – one level above their visitors.
Rangers manager Daniel Richards said after the game: “The team were sensational. We set up with a game plan beforehand which we executed really well. To get our first clean sheet of the season was really pleasing. We are now looking forward to the next round.”

The deadlock was broken in the 13th minute when Ben Duffy broke through the Greenfield defence, and although his effort was saved on the line by a scrambling defender, captain Blackwell was on hand to convert the rebound.
The home side from a tier above did most of the pressing thereafter, but Cefn defended stoically and then sealed the tie 15 minutes from time.

Chris ‘Scottish’ Roberts held the ball up well on the right-hand side of the area, then produced a smart turn and strike to wrong-foot the keeper and score into the opposite corner.

Llanrwst United 4 Bangor 1876 1

It was a case of unlucky 13 for 1876 as their season-long winning run ended on that very number of victories at Gwydir Park.
Welsh Alliance Division One hosts Llanrwst started as favourites, but with Gwynedd League 1876 having already eliminated three third-tier teams from cups this season, no-one was quite sure how this one would go.
In the end it was the Rwsters who deservedly prevailed, Matthew Mullender, Sam Roberts, Callum Parry and an own goal sealing a home success, Benn Lundstram with a consolation for the fifth-tier visitors.

Brymbo 4 Holywell Town 2

The 38th minute dismissal of Jason Renshaw at a time when Holywell were in front was a probable turning point in this all Welsh National League Premier Division tie.
Town had taken a 35th minute lead through a fierce Luke Edwards volley before Renshaw was sent off soon after for an alleged second yellow card offence.
It remained 1-0 up to the 64th minute when Jamie Cumming levelled.
The extra man now began to show as goals from Jordan Deer and Ben Kearney put Brymbo 3-1 to the good.
In the 87th minute, Dylan Allshorn reduced the deficit, but the home win was secured with a Jacques Stuart penalty in added time.

Bodedern Athletic 4 Llanberis 2

Last season’s semi-finalists Bodedern advanced to the final 32 of the 2019-20 Trophy thanks largely to a hat-trick from man in form Aidan Clark.
Dean Redmond was also on target for the Anglesey side, who were not at their best but still did enough to progress, Ifan Mansoor and Owain Jones replying for the Darans.

Gaerwen 4 Brickfield Rangers 2 (aet)

Impressive Welsh Alliance Division Two hosts Gaerwen showed the staying power required to see off stubborn opponents and advanced to round four.
It was 2-2 after 90 minutes, Arwel Williams and Iwan Williams on the mark for the islanders, Kieran Turton and Ben Roberts for the Welsh National League Premier basement outfit.
In the added half-hour, Callum Hughes and Sion Childes made it 4-2.

Lex XI 3 Menai Bridge Tigers 1

Welsh National League Division One giant-killers Lex, who eliminated holders Cefn Albion in the last round, required extra time to defeat Gwynedd League battlers Menai Bridge.
Matt Bennett opened the scoring for the Lawmen with a deft header deep into first half injury time to break the deadlock.
Menai equalised with a 30 yard thunderbolt from Callum Davidson to force another half-hour of action.
As both teams tired, space and mistakes were in abundance and a penalty was conceded by the visitors, which was duly dispatched by top-scorer Zack Davies.
Bennett got his second late on to put the tie beyond doubt.

Llay Welfare 9 Llandudno Athletic 1

Llay proved way too strong for their visitors from the Vale of Clwyd and Conwy Premier Division.
Man of the match Ryan Goodband (3), Rhys Lloyd (2), Jack Mountford, Aled Roberts, Tom Wells and Luke Taylor made up the home goals tally.

Mold Alexandra 4 New Brighton Villa 1

As expected, Mold moved into round four at the expense of a team a division below them in the Welsh National League.
Matty Lewis, Danny Warren, Kev Day and an own goal made up the Alex total, Liam Davies with a spot-kick putting Villa on the scoreboard.

Rhostyllen 2 Rhos Aelwyd 4

Aelwyd upset the odds with a 4-2 triumph in a tie switched to Maes Tegid, Bala.
Jake Simms, James Haynes, Liam Davies and Ryan Jenkins all found the net to send the 2018 finalists through, Steven Jones and Andrew Bithell responding for the ‘home’ team.
