Meet the Player: Dean Bryan (Llay Welfare)

Please tell us which clubs you have played for

I have previously played for Penyffordd in the Welsh National League, Gresford Athletic in the Cymru Alliance and now Llay Welfare in the Welsh National League.

How do you feel Llay Welfare have started the 2019-20 season?

It’s been a confused start from us this year. We had some good performances to start the season against the likes of Mold and Plas Madoc but struggled to put away our chances and lacked creativity. Against Saltney we dominated, came back from two-down to win 3-2, and showed how we can play when we want.

What do you think the team is capable of achieving this season?

This year our ambitions are to improve on last year’s points tally. We finished 6th last year and I think we have the ability to finish higher than that this year. I also believe it would be good if we could have a good go in the cups we’re involved in this year, as on our day, I’m confident we can beat anyone.

Which team you have played so far has impressed you the most?

I haven’t played in all games this season due to holidays so I can only comment on the teams I have played against. I was really impressed by Plas Madoc. They are a really good physical side who will cause teams big problems this year.

Best game ever played in?

There’s been a few! One that always comes to mind is a home game playing for Llay against Cefn Albion. It’s always a close game between us two and this one in particular was very a physical one whilst also being in the rain. We were winning 2-1 with not too long to go and at that time in the match I was playing at LB. I remember finding myself making a run from deep and suddenly finding myself one-on-one with the keeper with the ball at my feet. I managed to take the ball round the keeper and miss-hit the shot which trickled over the line. We went on to win 3-2.

What honours have you won in the game?

I have been lucky enough to win a number of club awards so far. Notably last season winning both Player’s Player and Manager’s Player for Llay Welfare which I was very surprised and grateful for.

Hardest opponent faced?

There’s been a few of them! I’d probably have to say Asa Hamilton from Rhyl (Airbus last year). He’s physical, good In the air, and doesn’t give you a second on the ball.

Most talented team-mate?

There’s a lot of talent at Llay at the moment so it’s hard to single out individuals. We all have our strengths and weaknesses and are at our best when everyone is on their game. Although, there are occasions where Matthew Worrall can make something happen out of nothing and I don’t understand how he does it!

Who do you see as potential champions of the WNL Premier Division?

I can see Mold being up there this season. They have started very well and have got a good set up. Brymbo will also be strong contenders similar to last season.

What are your future ambitions as a player?

My future ambitions are to continue to enjoy playing at whatever level I am at. I have played at higher levels but not enjoyed it as much as I am right now. I am still continuing to develop and improve as a player so I’m happy.

Have any members of your family achieved anything notable in sport?

My Dad used to play quite a good standard of rugby until a bad injury stopped him from going further. I also have cousins who have had a very successful career in cricket. One was once voted the 7th best Welsh cricketer of all time.

What item of importance to you could you survive without for the least time?

Definitely my phone. Be lost without it.

Dressing room joker at Llay Welfare?

Jared Taylor (Jegz) is the joker. Always brings the spirits up with his daft antics.

Do you visit the gym? If so, what is your favourite piece of equipment

I visit the gym quite a lot! The barbell is my favourite piece of equipment as you can do so much with it.

If you could change anything about Match of the Day, what would it be?

I’ve got no issues.

Greatest player ever – Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, or another choice?

Messi – no doubt about it.

Who is the current best heavyweight in world boxing?

After Joshua losing in his most recent fight I’ve got to say Tyson Fury.
