Plans launched to form new women’s football team on Anglesey

Plans are underway to form a second women’s football team on Anglesey.

Following the successful launch of the Trearddur Bay Bulls men’s side this season, the club aims to capitalise by introducing a female team.

At present, the only club representing the island in the North Wales Women’s League is Amlwch Town. Yet female football in general on Anglesey is thriving, the Ynys Mon women’s team having reached the final of the International Inter-Island Games this summer.

Llangefni Town have also produced many fine young players through its junior girls section.

Bulls chairman Chris Davies said: “The club are pleased to announce the launch of a women’s team. This will be the first time that women’s football has been played on the Lon Isallt pitch.

“On the back of a very successful start for the Trearddur Bay Bulls men’s team, we decided to try to grow the club further and a women’s team seemed the obvious choice.

“We have been approached a few times over the years by women wanting somewhere to play football.

“We were approached by Craig Richards asking whether we would be interested in joining a new North Wales women’s recreational football competition.

“This set up allows clubs to have friendly games against each other rather than full on league football. The new set up also allows teams that haven’t been able to raise a full team of 11 players play 10 v 10 or 9 v 9 games.

“It’s about getting more women into football rather than competing for a league etc. For us its a great way to start off, and if it leads to us establishing a team that can compete then that’s fantastic for the club.

“If you want to find out more about the team get in touch. Please don’t be scared off because you think you’re not good enough or fit enough as we want as many there as possible. You’ll develop as a player and with the training being enjoyable your fitness levels will soon increase.”

Only Amlwch have consistently been able to field a women’s team on Anglesey over the years. Teams representing Holyhead, Benllech and Llangefni have been tried, but were short-lived ventures.
