Menai Bridge hit top spot in North Wales Cricket League Premier Division

Champions Menai Bridge went top of the North Wales Cricket League Premier Division today with a hard-earned win in a low-scoring encounter with Pontblyddyn.

In the only other Premier encounter to beat the weather, Llandudno defeated bottom side Connah’s Quay by five wickets at The Oval.

Rain caused the following matches to be postponed: Brymbo v Pwllheli, Gresford v Northop, St Asaph v Mochdre.

Bangor and Denbigh had a free date.

North Wales League Premier Division

Menai Bridge (12) 110-10 Pontblyddyn (3) 81-10

Result: Menai Bridge won by 29 runs

After being bowled out cheaply at Tyn-y-Caeau, champions Menai Bridge must have feared the worst, but the Anglesey side bounced back to dismiss Pontblyddyn for a lower total and achieve the win which put them top of the Premier.

Put into bat, the Bridge plummeted from 67-3 to 110 all out, Luke Jones top-scoring with 28, while for Pont, James Hughes grabbed 4-14, Harry Williams 3-33 and Chris Moss 2-33.

In reply, the visitors were well placed on 51-3, but then collapsed to 81 all out, David Foulkes (20) their top contributor.

Sean O’Callaghan was Bridge’s most successful bowler with 3-27, Gerallt Roberts scooped 2-5 and skipper Dion Holden 2-8.

Points: 12-3.

Llandudno (12) 113-5 Connah’s Quay (3) 112-10

Result: Llandudno won by five wickets

Matthew Lambe’s unbeaten 33 proved crucial in helping Llandudno over the winning line at The Oval.

Quay won the toss and elected to bat, but nosedived to 42-7 before Joshua Clarke (36) and Rob Downey (28 not out) steadied the ship with a stand of 65 for the eighth wicket.

Captain Martin Burger had earlier made 25, but the away side’s final total of 112 all out did not look too challenging.

Matthew Jones snapped up 3-25 for the hosts, Tom Thornton with 2-1 from five overs and Jack Thornton 2-14.

Llandudno’s innings suffered occasional alarms, but they got home comfortably enough on 113-5 in 27.5 overs, Lambe’s effort the most decisive in sealing a 12-3 points verdict.

Scott Adams claimed 2-31 for the Deesiders, whose search for that elusive first win continues.
