Rhyl Ladies FC are determined to make the most of their great escape

Rhyl Ladies FC are on the lookout for new players as they prepare for a sixth straight season competing in the top league in Wales.

Rhyl Ladies recently celebrated the news they have escaped relegation and will continue playing in the Welsh Premier Women’s League next season.

Despite the Lilywhites finishing bottom of the table this term, there will be no clubs relegated from the top flight for the 2019-20 campaign.

During the 2018/19 season, the league was reduced to nine teams due to Caernarfon Town’s resignation.

With only one team applying for promotion next season – Welsh Women’s League champions Aberystwyth Town – that restores the WPWL to the desired 10-club membership.

No teams have applied to come up from North Wales, so there is no relegation from the WPWL and Rhyl stay at the top level.

FAW Head of Competitions, Andrew Howard, said: “There were only nine member clubs at the end of the season following the resignation of Caernarfon.

“There was only one promotion candidate (Aberystwyth Ladies). Therefore, in order to restore the ten-team league, no club is relegated.”

Rhyl, who also received a reprieve from the drop at the end of 2015/16 after finishing in the bottom two relegation spots, joined the WPWL in 2014/15.

They played under the name Rhyl and Prestatyn for two seasons before becoming known as Rhyl Ladies in 2016/17. Next season will be their sixth in the WPWL.

Rhyl Ladies manager/coach Cassandra Thomas said: “My planning starts now with the retention and recruitment of new players to add to the team. My aim is to come back stronger with this team.

“I want to talk to players who want to compete weekly at tier 1 level in Wales. We have fantastic facilities both off and on the pitch at Rhyl FC.”
