NEWFA CHALLENGE CUP FINAL 2012-13

Buckley Town 3 (Wynne, Hayes, Caddick) Airbus UK Broughton 0

Buckley lifted the cup for a ninth time – a competition record which still stands

Back in April 2013, the Bucks won a record ninth NEWFA Challenge Cup at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground, subjecting a strong Airbus UK Broughton to a 3-0 defeat.
Captain John Leonard and the long-term casualty Ant Williams lifted the trophy together after an incredible final saw 10-man Buckley outclass the Wingmakers.
It could have been different if Airbus had responded when Airbus keeper Ashley Crosswaite saved an early penalty from Colin Quirk.
Had the Wingmakers taken encouragement from that and attacked the Bucks they could have changed the outcome of the match, but instead both sides settled for long-range chances early-on.
Buckley gave Airbus another chance to take the initiative when Gareth Edwards was booked for a tussle on the edge of the area but the resulting free-kick failed to trouble Jamie Hulse in the Town goal.
NEIL WYNNE finally broke the deadlock just after the half-hour when he left the Airbus defence flat-footed and lofted a superb long-range effort over Crosswaite which ricocheted off the bar before crossing the line.
That was how it remained until half-time.
Airbus, as expected, came out of the blocks hard following the break but Buckley threw a blanket over them and prevented them from getting a clear sight of Hulse’s goal.
But on the hour Hulse, a spectator for most of the game, played an unexpected role for Airbus after the referee judged he had handled the ball deliberately outside the area when his momentum carried him while closing down an Airbus shot.
He was instantly dismissed and goalscorer Wynne took over between the sticks.
He had similarly little to do however, as Buckley never showed they were depleted.
Excellent work going forward by Quirk set up STUART HAYES to cut inside the area and fire home to double Buckley’s lead within minutes of the red card.
The celebrations from the second goal had barely died down when Joey Desormeaux slotted the ball through to Liam Caddick.
Midfielder CADDICK easily outpaced the Airbus defence and coolly slid the ball underneath the advancing Crosswaite to make it 3-0 on 72 minutes.
Airbus recognised the writing on the wall and in the final 15 minutes the Bucks laid siege to their goal, the Wingmakers clinging on with a series of clearances to fend off their rivals.
