Wales ace Mared Griffiths scored twice for Manchester United in a thrilling cup victory over Liverpool on Wednesday night.
The 19-year-old from Trawsfynydd bagged a first half brace in United’s 5-3 triumph against their north west rivals in the Players Cup at the BrewDog Stadium in St Helens.
The result maintained United’s perfect record in the group stage, with Griffiths’ goals taking her to six for the season – all in this tournament.
United have won all three of their matches in the competition – formerly known as the Women’s League Cup – by an aggregate score of 20-5.
Griffiths is also a flourishing talent at international level, having scored four goals in 12 senior appearances for Cymru. She earned 15 Under-17 caps and played six times for the U19s.
Having played for the FAW North Academy, in July 2024 the former Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor student moved to Manchester United to join the club’s under-21 academy team.
On 11 December 2024, Griffiths was named to Manchester United’s senior matchday squad for the first time; and was an unused substitute in the League Cup group stage match against Newcastle United.
Griffiths made her senior debut on 8 February 2025, appearing as an 81st-minute substitute and scoring twice in a 6–0 FA Cup victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. On 14 July 2025, Griffiths signed her first professional contract with United.
On 3 February 2026, Griffiths joined Sunderland on loan for the remainder of the 2025–26 season.
She returned to Manchester United this season, and on 23 September 2026, during her first competitive start, Griffiths scored a hat-trick in a 10–1 WSL Players Cup win over Sheffield United.
