Tricky pitch and five regulars missing did not help Bangor 1876 Women’s cause, says interim-manager O’Neal

While the outcome suggests Bangor were outplayed, the final scoreline does not do justice to the visitors’ efforts.

After four straight wins to kick off 2026-27, the Citizens slipped to their first defeat under interim-manager Chris O’Neal.

The Bangor boss was less than impressed with the difficult playing surface at Mount Field, but pointed out his team performed well on the whole despite being minus five regulars.

O’Neal said: “Bangor certainly went to Llanfair for a game and were much the better side for the opening 40 minutes with Menna Evans having two chances, but we didn’t quite do enough to get the lead.

“Just on 41 minutes a lucky break for Llanfair saw a long range shot skid along the floor and left keeper Catrin Roberts stranded.

“Second half saw Bangor once again dominate the first 10 minutes but were caught on the break and we found ourselves 2-0 down; 3-0 soon followed and with Bangor finding it hard to come back it was all about game in the bag for the remaining subs.”

O’Neal added: “This is a very strong Llanfair side who clearly have a big home advantage playing on what would best be described as a potato field.  But they stuck to their job and did what they needed to for a win.

“Multiple changes were necessary due to personnel being away, with Amy Mano, Holly Owen Roberts, Carol Lewis and Ffion Bee all missing.   Seren Macdonald also pulled out at the last minute with flu, so 5 missing from our usual squad.  

“Despite a loss that looks like a heavy loss.  I’m sure the opposition would have known they were in a game and they got lucky multiple times.  Look forward to playing them on a football field.”

Mary Bailey, Emma Williams, Paris Schofield and Tania Wylde shared the goals for the Powys hosts.
