Who are the welcome newcomers to the North East Wales Football League?
AFC Weston Rhyn was formed in 2023.
They are based in Weston Rhyn, a large village and civil parish in Shropshire, England. It lies between the towns of Chirk, in North Wales, and Oswestry, in England.
A notable resident is former Bangor City striker and Wales non-league international Frank Mottram, the Citizens’ fourth-highest scorer in the League of Wales on 79 goals.
In his first spell at Farrar Road, Mottram won LoW Championship medals in 1994 and 1995 before joining Conference outfit Macclesfield Town.
Mottram represented the Citizens in Europe, scoring in the 1994-95 tie against IK Akranes of Iceland. It was City’s first goal in European competition for nine years, the previous marksman being Everton Williams against Fredrikstad of Norway in 1985.
Newly-formed AFC Weston Rhyn joined the Shropshire County League Division One in 2023-24 and finished bottom in their debut season.
In 2024-25, they fared much better, securing ninth place, but last season ended up just one off the basement.
The club recently named Alex Garmston as their new first team manager.
The original Weston Rhyn FC disbanded some years ago, while the village ground was also home to Chirk Town, the 2019-20 North East Wales League champions, who sadly folded in 2021-22.
