Archive Classics: Prestatyn Sports complete a quadruple (2014/15)

The amazing Prestatyn Sports squad of 2014-15 – quadruple winners

Having covered North Wales football for close on 40 years. I’ve attended and reported on hundreds if not thousands of games across the pyramid.
Here’s another in a series of classics from the archives

2014/15

PRESTATYN SPORTS 2 (Griffiths 55, Harper 74)
LLANDUDNO ALBION 1 (S Cheung 6)

MAY 23, 2015

Prestatyn Sports lifted their fourth trophy of the season but underdogs Albion pushed them all the way in an entertaining Vale of Clwyd & Conwy League President’s Cup Final at Rhyl.
The Llandudno side took an early lead which they held up to half time, but once Prestatyn levelled three minutes into the second period, the feeling around the ground was they would go on to win comfortably.
However, Albion rallied superbly and created the better chances before Sports went ahead with what turned out to be a 74th-minute winner.
The Maesdu Park side went so close to forcing extra time when Craig Roberts volleyed wide of a gaping goal in the closing seconds.
With the Premier Division title, plus the North Wales Coast FA Intermediate Cup and Premier Cup already in the bag, Sports started off strong favourites, but they were in for an early shock.
NWCFA Junior Cup and REM Jones Cup winners Albion, also promoted to the Premier Division, edged in front in the sixth minute when Charley Kemp lifted a lovely ball into the box and Steve Cheung lashed home an unstoppable shot.
The rest of the half was all Prestatyn, but a mixture of bad finishing, great goalkeeping and heroic defending ensured they failed to open their account before the interval.
Tudno keeper Alex Owen performed marvels to push a Darren Cassidy header on to the underside of the bar and the danger was cleared.
Cassidy fired off target from inside the box and nodded over from close range, while Craig Griffiths had a goalbound shot blocked by Luke Fountain.
Albion needed to stay solid in the opening stages of the second half to frustrate Sports further, but unfortunately for them a Russ Jones delivery into the box was headed home by Griffiths, despite a fine attempt by Owen to keep the ball out.
Anyone expecting the less experienced Albion to crumble were in for a surprise as the Llandudno men took the game to their opponents.
Mark Montgomery headed straight at keeper Sion Williams, Dave Maddock drilled an effort across the face of goal and Jordan Kane blasted a free kick over.
Sixteen minutes from time, a corner from Sports substitute Ian Dunn was not cleared properly and James Harper thundered into the roof of the net.
Gareth Walsh almost made it 3-1 to Sports when he headed against the post from a Dunn cross, then in the 93rd minute keeper Williams punched a free kick on to the right boot of Roberts, but his powerful volley missed the open goal by inches, leaving the Prestatyn sideto celebrate a remarkable achievement.
