Charity is the winner at veterans’ football match

Hope House Tŷ Gobaith children’s hospices scored a fantastic donation from the second annual Wrexham Charity Cup football match.

Croes Howell Casuals faced off against Wrexham Armed Forces Veterans at the Llay Welfare Club on Saturday May 30th and the game was followed by a BBQ and raffle evening at the Croes Howel pub.

In total the day raised a fantastic sum which will go directly to the care of local children and families living with a life-threatening condition at the charity’s two hospices.

Co-organiser, Neil Jones shared: “The game finished 3-0 to Croes Howell Casuals FC however it was very competitive match and with the competition now level at one a piece means we will be competing again in 2027 for the coveted Wrexham Charity Cup.

“The whole day once again demonstrated the power of football to bring communities together, support veterans, and raise money for those who need it most.

“The atmosphere throughout the day was fantastic, and we were honoured to welcome the Mayor of Wrexham and Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Beverly Parry-Jones.

“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to every sponsor, supporter, volunteer, organiser, player and family member who contributed to making the day such a tremendous success.

“Also, huge thanks to Llay Welfare FC for all the facilities and The Croes Howell Gastro Pub for hosting the event after the match.”

Wrexham area fundraiser for Hope House, Bethan Young was right behind the event and said: “What a fantastic day in the Wrexham football community – the sun was out and a great time was had by all, even the Tŷ Gobaith Tiger.

“This is such an amazing amount of money and goes to show how much people in the area care.

“Every penny raised will go directly to supporting respite stays, physiotherapy, nursing care and play-centred therapies for seriously ill children.

“We’re incredibly grateful to all at Wrexham Armed Forces Veterans FC for their support once again – they really are brilliant.”

  • Hope House Children’s Hospices provide specialist nursing care and support to more than 750 children, and their families, who live in Shropshire, Cheshire, North and Mid Wales. They have two hospices – Hope House in Oswestry and Tŷ Gobaith in Conwy.
