A Flintshire club which spent nine seasons in the Cymru Alliance League and reached the FAW Amateur Trophy final in the 1990s will return to the North Wales football map in 2026-27.

Mostyn FC will join the North East Wales Football League Division Three next season, it has been confirmed.

The new team will be mainly made up of the Greenfield Reserves side which competed in North East Wales Reserve Division 2 this season.

Mark Presford, who has been manager of Greenfield Reserves, will lead the new Mostyn outfit.

The last team to represent the village were Mostyn Dragons in the former Clwyd East Football League back in 2017-18.

FOOTBALL IN MOSTYN

The former Mostyn YMCA have a proud history

A football club was formed in Mostyn in 1910, known as Mostyn Temperance. This club continued its existence until at least November 1911.
The village was later represented by Mostyn YMCA. In the 1936–37 season they won the Dyserth Area League, and two of their players signed amateur contracts for Bolton Wanderers.
In 1938 another Mostyn side, T.P. ‘s, joined the Dyserth League, with many former members of the YMCA club.
By 1949, there were three clubs in Mostyn – Mostyn YMCA, Mostyn Church Guild and Mostyn Aelwyd Club.
In December 1963, Mostyn YMCA were faced with losing their Maes Pennant ground. However, the development previously stated to be “immediate” was pushed back until spring of 1964 by Holywell Rural Council’s Housing Committee.
The YMCA club was also looking to buy land for a ground of their own.
Mostyn YMCA won the NWCFA Junior Cup six times; the second most of any club, only beaten by Menai Bridge Tigers’ eight titles.
In 1971–72 they beat Denbigh Town 1-0 to lift the North Wales Coast Amateur Cup for the only time in their history. They also reached the final the previous season, but lost to Llangoed and District.
Various clubs represented Mostyn in the Clwyd League between the 1970s and the 2000s, including Mostyn Youth Club, Mostyn YMCA, Mostyn FC, Mostyn Albion, Mostyn Reserves, Mostyn Lodge, Mostyn Youth and Mostyn Dragons.
In this league, Mostyn FC were champions of Division 2 in 1983-84 and the Premier Division in 1988-89; Mostyn Lodge were Division 2 champions 1997-98 and Division 1 title winners in 1998-99 and Mostyn Dragons were Division 2 champions 2008-09

MOSTYN FC

Although it is claimed Mostyn Football Club have a history dating to 1912, this appears to refer to the various earlier clubs.
Mostyn FC first emerged in the Clwyd League and won the Premier Division title in 1988-89
The Cymru Alliance was established in 1990 and Mostyn moved up two divisions to become founding members of the league.
The club spent nine seasons in the Tier 2 league, achieving a highest position of fifth in 1993-94.
In 1994-95, Mostyn were relegated and set to play in the Welsh Alliance League for the new season. Mostyn had been bottom for most of the season, but Penrhyncoch received a 39-point deduction for use of an ineligible player, which sent them to the basement instead.
As Wrexham Reserves left the league, a vote was held between the league’s clubs to decide which club would be relegated. It ended in favour of keeping Penrhyncoch in the league, and relegating Mostyn.
Mostyn appealed to the Football Association of Wales against relegation and were successful, earning reinstatement to the Cymru Alliance.
After finishing bottom of the Cymru Alliance in 1998–99, Mostyn folded due to a combination of player shortages and issues with vandalism at their Maes Pennant pitch.

MOSTYN DRAGONS

Originally started as a junior team, Mostyn Dragons developed a senior side in 2007. They became champions of Clwyd League Division Two and were promoted to Division One in 2008–09. The club’s home ground was Maes Pennant.
The 2011–12 season saw the club move to the new Clwyd East Football League.
After more than holding their own, the club withdrew from the league in 2014-15.
They returned to the league for the 2016–17 season, but withdrew again after the 2017–18 season.
