Buckley Town part ways with manager Asa Hamilton and withdraw from cup quarter-final

Asa Hamilton has departed as Buckley Town manager

Buckley Town have parted company with manager Asa Hamilton.

The club has also announced it has subsequently withdrawn from tomorrow;s scheduled NEWFA Challenge Cup quarter-final at FC Queen’s Park.

The 34-year-old Hamilton, who had been player-boss at The Globe for two-and-a-half years, endured a difficult 2025-26 season with the team losing 11 of their last 13 league games although they comfortably avoided relegation from the JD Cymru North.

During that barren league run, the Bucks also suffered a heartbreaking Welsh Blood Service League Cup semi-final penalties defeat to Treowen Stars.

Hamilton became player-manager in October 2023. After a difficult start in that 2023-24 campaign, he guided Town to safety in Cymru North and the club reached the quarter-finals of the Welsh Cup for the first time since forming in 1977, losing to eventual competition winners Connah’s Quay Nomads.

Last season, they finished an excellent fifth in the table, but ended up 13th out of 16 teams this term.

Hamilton’s first game in charge of the Bucks, following the departure of Jason Aldcroft, was a 3-2 win at Ruthin Town on October 21, 2023.

He was manager of the Flintshire club for 99 games, the last of which was a 5-1 ;league defeat at Holyhead Hotspur on Saturday.

In a statement, Buckley Town confirmed Hamilton’s departure, along with his coaching staff.

It said: “We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Asa and his staff for their efforts and commitment during their time at the club, and we wish them all the very best for the future.

“As a result of these developments, the club has taken the difficult decision to withdraw from tomorrow evening’s NEWFA Cup fixture against FC Queen’s Park.

“We apologise to our supporters, to FC Queen’s Park, and to the competition organisers for any inconvenience caused by this decision.

“Further communication on the new management team will follow in due course.

“We will be making no further comment.”

As a player, centre-forward Hamilton began his career with Airbus Youth, then had spells with Buckley and Lex XI before returning to the Wingmakers in 2010/11, where he made six substitute appearances towards the end of the Welsh Premier season.

He then moved on to Ruthin Town, Llandudno, Penycae, Rhayader Town, Porthmadog and Buckley again, before signing for Guilsfield in 2017/18, where he scored an impressive 17 goals.

The following season he returned to Airbus, where his 13 goals helped Steve O’Shaughnessy’s side win the 2018-19 Cymru Alliance title by a street.

In 2019-20, he joined the former Rhyl FC, switched to Welsh Premier club Caernarfon Town in 2020-21, but by the start of 2021 was back at Buckley Town, where he had been ever since.
