The greatest day in the distinguished history of Caernarfon Town Football Club – Welsh Cup winners for the very first time!
While the famous run to the FA Cup third round in 1986-87. those amazing victories over Football League clubs Stockport County and York City, plus the Europa Conference League triumph against Crusaders in 2024-25 will never be forgotten, there was no trophy at the end of them.
Sunday was different. The Canaries entered the history books as they won Wales’ premier domestic competition, joining the likes of Wrexham, Cardiff City and Swansea City on the roll of honour.
Roared on by their fervent support, who made the long Sunday journey to Rodney Parade in Newport, Caernarfon swept Flint Town United aside with three goals in the first 17 minutes.
Sion Bradley, Matty Jones and Adrian Cieslewicz found the net to give the Cofis an early firm hand on the illustrious trophy. It was a grip that was never to loosen.
1 min: Golden chance for Caernarfon inside 30 seconds. Daniel Gosset crossed from the right, Zack Clarke flicks on, but Bradley miskicks with just the keeper to beat.
6 min – GOAL: Josh Lock shows determination to find Paulo Mendes, whose clever pass picks out Bradley in the box. BRADLEY works the ball onto his right foot and applies the most composed of finishes. CAERNARFON 1 FLINT 0
12 min – GOAL: Elliott Reeves fouls Bradley just outside the box. MATTY JONES sends an exquisite free-kick over the static Flint wall and in off the post. CAERNARFON 2 FLINT 0
15 min: Flint’s Mike Burke makes space in the box, but his goalbound shot is blocked by Phil Mooney.
17 min – GOAL: Matty Jones corner is flicked on by Mooney and CIESLEWICZ’S header hits the underside of the bar and crosses the goal-line. CAERNARFON 3 FLINT 0
21 min: Caernarfon keeper Connor Roberts produces a superb point blank save to deny Burke.
22 min: Jack Thorn cross, Darren Stephenson header glances off Cofis player Mendes onto post and the ball ends up in Roberts’ grateful arms. Fine margins – a Silkmen goal at this stage and who knows?
26 min: Almost a fourth for Caernarfon – Owen free kick palmed onto bar by Jack Flint
43 min: Flint saves brilliantly again to deny Lock.
67 min: Flint find the net but flag was raised for offside
74 min: Sub Rio Owen breaks down the right for Caernarfon, slips the ball nicely to Lock, whose shot is kept out by Flint and Clarke is denied by a block from the follow-up.
79 min: Rio Owen is free in the box but blasts over.
85 min: Reeves goes down under challenge from Matty Jones in the box – no penalty
88 min: One of the biggest cheers of the final – Caernarfon Town’s evergreen veteran, the 39-year-old Darren Thomas, takes the field as a substitute on the club’s greatest day.
90+4 min: Flint’s Ben Wynne heads straight at Roberts.
90+4 min: Sub Brad Young fires over the bar.
