Big guns blown away on night of Welsh Cup shocks!

Big shocks in the JD Welsh Cup tonight!

The New Saints and Connah’s Quay Nomads, winners of the trophy between them for the past six seasons are OUT.

Saints lost 2-1 at Cardiff Met, who also beat the full-timers 3-2 away in the league a fortnight ago, while Tier 2 Cymru North leaders Llandudno eliminated Nomads, fourth in the Cymru Premier, by the same 2-1 scoreline.

The last team apart from Saints and Quay to win the Welsh Cup were Bala Town in 2016-17.

Bala are also out of the competition. Before that you have to go back to Prestatyn Town’s amazing 2012-13 triumph to find a winner apart from TNS, Nomads and Bala.

Such happenings can only be great for the Welsh Cup – it is good to see the prizes spread around and now we can look forward to the exciting prospect of who will lift the famous trophy at the end of the campaign.

TONIGHT’S ROUND THREE RESULTS
Cambrian United 1-3 Penybont
Cardiff Met University 2-1 The New Saints
Llandudno 2-1 Connahs Quay Nomads
Llanelli Town 0-6 Barry Town United
