North East Wales League: Division 1 – leaders held, Queen’s Park hit six, Chirk triumph

Young goalkeeper Jake Madsen was a hero for Chirk AAA in their win at Penyffordd Lions in Division 1

NORTH EAST WALES FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND-UP – SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25

DIVISION 1

Penyffordd Lions 1
Chirk AAA 3

Chirk completed a season’s double over a Penyffordd side they also beat in the FAW Amateur Trophy in September.
A literal game of two halves, played in what seemed to be the middle of a tornado, took place on Saturday afternoon at Ysgol Penyffordd.
Before the game there was a minute’s silence in memory of Penyffordd midfielder Liam Williams’ father who had recently passed away. It was impeccably observed by both teams. Chirk AAAs offer their condolences to Liam’s family at this time.
The wind was definitely on Penyffordd’s side in the first half and the hosts launched repeated long balls towards their forwards, putting the Chirk back-four under pressure.
Penyffordd were awarded a penalty in the 4th minute. Matthew Bithell was denied by a fantastic Jake Madsen save, only for Craig Worthington to slot away the rebound.
There was a change in fortunes on 15 minutes when Liam Sklenar latched onto a Ryan Lancelotte through ball to lob the keeper and level things up.
No time to celebrate as Penyffordd maintained the frenetic tempo of the first half. However, Chirk rode out the home pressure until half time.
Chirk definitely had the wind in their sails in the second half, mounting endless attacks.
Club captain Tom Freeman had to come off on 53 minutes after aggravating his injured knee, and was replaced by Daniel Evans
Evans had literally been on the pitch for 10 seconds before getting on the end of an Edgar Lima Teixeira corner and headed home his first goal in senior football.
Chirk AAAs kept attacking but the Penyffordd defence did well to keep them at bay.
That was until the 86th minute when late substitute Alfie Harris lobbed the advancing Penyffordd keeper to seal the game.
Man of the Match for Chirk was U19 goalkeeper Madsen who stepped in on short notice and was superb between the posts, never putting a foot wrong.
