With nothing riding on this game – Flint already qualified for the last 16 and Llangefni unable to progress – both sides made changes to their usual line-ups, providing essential game time for squad members.
Despite going a goal behind early on, Llangefni recovered to win well and end their Genero Trophy group campaign on a high note.
Although based in Tier 3, Cefni sportingly put their names forward for this competition as replacements for the folded CPD Y Rhyl 1879 Women and did themselves proud, losing by just a single goal to Bangor and Llanfair before ending Flint’s unbeaten record this season.
Town gave a rare start to Lara Cain, who scored in Cefni’s very first match back at the start of 2021-22.
The left-winger has been a loyal squad player over the past four seasons and impressed on what was her 39th appearance in all before being replaced close to the hour.
Flint made a great start when ex-Wrexham player Isabella Devereux, on her first start for the Silkwomen, latched onto a smart pass from Zoe Stopford and slipped the ball past goalkeeper Katie Spruce from close range.
Milly Lowe, one of Llangefni’s most promising strikers, levelled the score on 19 minutes and it stayed 1-1 up to half time.
After the break, Cefni edged in front on 54 minutes when Ffion Owen found the net.
It was touch and go before the hosts pulled clear late on. Amber Brown converted a penalty on 80 for her eighth goal in four games and in added time Lowe notched her second.
At the other end there was no further joy for Flint with Katie Spruce in typically fine form between the posts.
Flint sub Becca Eagles was red-carded late on for dissent.
A good win for Dan Gregg’s side who will now return to league action with added confidence after proving again they can match Tier 2 teams.
Gregg, who was without the services of defenders Marissa George and Beth Jones, midfielder Cerys Gadd and the versatile Catrin Roberts, said: “All the squad stepped up and gave an excellent performance.
“Lara started and fair play she was brilliant. Milly’s pace and strength was a constant threat. Elin Roberts had a brilliant game as well.”
Llanfair top Group 4 and advanced to the last 16 with a comfortable win over Bangor.
Tania Wylde (2), Emma Williams and Paris Schofield shared the goals for the Powys outfit.
