In our recent article on North Wales football club mascots we only reported one-third of the truth!
As well as Myrtle the Turtle, who we DID mention, Colwyn Bay has TWO other cute and cuddly representatives – Sammy the Seagull and Blue the Turtle!
The trio were all on parade at the weekend when the Bay beat Caernarfon Town 1-0 in the JD Cymru Premier League.
It is perhaps hardly surprising that the best-supported club in North Wales after Wrexham goes that extra mile in providing triple entertainment for the fans.
After winning the Cymru North league title in 2023-24, the original Sammy the Seagull celebrated with players and fans at the Llanelian Road ground. One of the players (we are sworn to secrecy which one) wore the head and danced and leapt around for the crowd during the festivities.
While looking very chirpy, Sammy was starting to show signs of wear, so he (or she) has been relaunched in a brand new costume.
Myrtle also has a partner in crime in Blue, who takes his/her name from the Blue Turtle Arena where the Bay play home matches.
Both turtles were on duty last Saturday with their dazzling smiles, proving themselves to be the best double act since Morph and Chas (remember Tony Hart fans?).
Mascots are a wonderful thing and a hugely important part of a football club.
There are not that many in North Wales, but Colwyn Bay are doing the tradition proud by offering three of the beauties!
Incidentally, does anyone remember the name of the pirate who was Rhyl FC’s mascot in the 2000’s and did Caernarfon Town once have a large inflatable canary flying and floating around The Oval (and if so, was the canary ever given a name?).
