REPORT: SHAUN BEST

Ardal North West leaders Bangor City 1876 continued their fine start to the season with a 3-1 victory over Connah’s Quay Town on Friday evening.

Despite going a goal down, the Citizens rallied to record their fifth victory out of six league games.

The home side came flying out of the blocks, penetrating both flanks with a series of dangerous balls into the box.

Veteran striker Jamie Reed won a free kick and almost rolled back the years when his backheel from Louis Corrigan’s resulting delivery struck the post.

The visitors then hit the front, arguably against the run of play. A searching free kick was pumped long and high into the opposition box, with Leon Bennett taking advantage of the commotion to head his team in front on 24 minutes.

The lead lasted less than five minutes, when Cai Owen’s pinpoint cross was glanced in by the head of Dylan Summers-Jones.

Less than 60 seconds later, the ball was in the Connah’s Quay net again. Reed intercepted a low shot with another backheel and this time it rolled in.

Town looked to Pascal Gomez’s energy out wide as a way back into the game. A mazy run from the winger looked promising, but his wayward shot ended up hitting the corner flag.

Bangor lost Reed to injury after the frontman pulled up with a muscle strain. His replacement Sam Jones was immediately threaded through, but young Town goalkeeper Elliott Jones did brilliantly to rush out and block the substitute’s effort.

A trip on Summers-Jones gave the home side a penalty early in the second half.

Corrig McGonigle stepped up and coolly dispatched the penalty over the dive of Jones for his sixth league goal of the season.

The winning margin could have been greater when McGonigle almost caught Jones in possession around the goalmouth and Sam Jones also hit the side netting late on.

Bangor’s fans will be encouraged by the club’s unbeaten start as they bid to make a swift return to Tier 2.
