What a brilliant way to end 2024-25 – a biggest win of the season for a Flint side which completed an eighth straight league victory at the Essity Stadium.

Lee Fowler’s men finished level on points with local rivals and stadium-sharers Connah’s Quay Nomads and only ended up a place below the Deesiders in eighth (third in the Play-Off Conference) on goal difference.

In phase two of the campaign, the Silkmen picked up a superb 22 points out of a possible 30 and scooped 15 out of 15 at home.

Taking on a Newtown side relegated after a 33-year stay in the national league, the hosts were on fire from the start, George Maire’s bullet header from a Jake Phillips free kick acrobatically palmed over the bar by Julian Schwarzer.

Elliott Reeves then sent in a low cross which Ben Wynne hit first time, but Schwarzer was down smartly to save.

The deadlock was broken in the 27th minute in fortunate circumstances for the Silkmen.

Reeves broke to the left byline, fed the ball into the six-yard box and in a wild attempt to clear, Newtown’s Rob Evans only found his own net.

It was 2-0 four minutes later. Captain Harry Owen delivered from his own half to Wynne, whose slide-rule pass released Reeves to finish in clinical style – his sixth goal of phase 2 and 11th of the season in the league.

Another fine Wynne pass enabled Maire to make it 3-0 on 43 minutes.

Flint stayed on top in the second half, Maire’s close range effort blocked, Reeves side footing just wide and Josh Jones missing an open goal.

The fourth goal finally arrived in the 83rd minute. It was a disaster at the back for the Robins as Evans stumbled at the wrong time and the 19-year-old Maire strode clear before drilling past the keeper.
