Pwllheli and Llangefni Town will meet in the Betty Pickering Cup Final for the second season running.
Sunday’s contrasting semi-finals saw Pwll win comfortably 5-0 at Trearddur Bay, while cup holders Cefni edged a 2-1 verdict at Llanystumdwy.
Bay knew their last-four clash would present a big challenge, facing last year’s runners-up Pwll with key players missing.
Pwllheli took an early lead after they won a corner in the fifth minute. Katie Bolton produced a great save from a header, the ball rebounded off the crossbar, then off the head of a home player only to fall at the feet of Charley Davies, who fired into the roof of the net.
Despite being forced into an early substitution, with Shelley McMullan replacing Clare Head and a reshuffle of the team following, the home side defended well against a well-drilled Pwllheli outfit for the remainder of the first half.
Chloe Taylor was first to a lot of Pwllheli’s through balls for Bay, and Erin Mulvey was relentless in the middle.
Some half chances were created by the home side, but it was Pwllheli who struck next with a tidy strike from the edge of a crowded box by Stacey Sansome on 38 minutes making it 2-0.
Just before half time, Pwll scored a third when Lois Thomas broke through and managed to slot past the onrushing Bolton for her 19th goal of the season.
Trearddur Bay made a double substitution on the hour, Angharad Price-Evans replacing Catrin Jones and Katie Davies coming on for Saffron Williams. Bolton switched gloves for her shooting boots and moved to play as a striker.
A slice of misfortune for stand-in keeper Katie Davies saw Pwllheli score their fourth through Charley Davies on 70 minutes.
Minutes later Katie Davies made a superb save to keep out a strike looking destined for the top corner.
The home team persevered and continued to battle hard and try and create chances, the best probably falling to McMullan, who twice looked like she was almost through after some good running, only for Pwllheli’s defenders to make some cracking recovery runs to deny her a clear chance at goal.
Pwllheli’s fifth and final goal came after a break down the right saw a cross delivered into a dangerous area. Charley Davies was first to it and completed her hat trick with a calm finish.
Plenty of positives for Trearddur Bay to take away though. Rhian Griffiths returned to the starting 11, and impressed with her calmness on the ball and link up play.
In the 75th minute Sarah Flower replaced Freya Davies, marking her return to the squad after recently having a baby. Lots of fight and graft was shown through the whole team.
Shout out to Chloe Taylor (sponsored by Ella Hughes & R Hughes heating services) who got Pwllheli’s player of the match – always a force of nature at the back, first to most balls, strong and fast and handy with a daft joke or two.
Praise also to Pwllheli’s Magi Hughes who had a fantastic game. Sharp and classy on and off the ball and seemed to pop up all over the place.
Two goals from Ellie Coulson kept Llangefni on course to repeat last season’s Betty Pickering Cup success.
Coulson struck first in the eighth minute, but Llanystumdwy are a stronger force these days and levelled on 29 through Seren Ellis, Annest Roberts with the assist.
The game was up for grabs throughout the second half, but it was Town who snatched it when Coulson found the net again with her 18th goal of the season.
A meeting with Pwllheli in the final awaits.
Berriew took a big step towards the league title with a single-goal win at title rivals Henllan on Sunday.
Having lost 3-2 to the same opponents in the Shield the weekend before, Berriew gained revenge thanks to a Hannah Richards goal on 69 minutes.
Henllan were down to bare bones player-wise with Siwan Lloyd injured from last week, another three pulling out over the weekend and Ella Simcox unavailable,
Lacey Whitehouse was the only sub and she had come on in the opening minutes for Ella Allen.
It was always going to be an uphill task against a very good Berriew team. The visitors made two changes with youngster Teleri Roberts and Caitlyn Gorman coming in for Lowri Savage and Bethany Lane.
Both teams, who were evenly matched, cancelled each other out in the first half with defences on top and hardly any clear cut chances.
Berriew had few shots that went wide, while Henllan came close to breaking the deadlock when Mabli Fitzgerald hit the bar in the 30th minute.
In the second half the game opened up a bit more. On 69 minutes the decisive moment saw Gemma Jones’ shot well saved by Rhian Edwards, but Richards managed to squeeze the ball over the line from a tight angle.
Henllan’s best chance came on 76 when Beth Roberts skipped past the Berriew keeper and laid the ball to Whitehouse, whose goal bound shot was blocked by Ellie Davies, who had been outstanding in both games.
Henllan, who had given everything on the pitch, piled on the pressure in the last 10 minutes, creating a few half chances without really troubling Sarah Parkes in goal.
Henllan hope to have a few players back next week for the Betty Pickering Shield semi final against local rivals Denbigh Ladies.
Ceri Purvis guided third-place Denbigh to victory with a hat-trick in Sunday’s tussle at newcomers Coedpoeth.
Purvis also missed a late penalty, but Catrin Davies and Lucy Morris did add further goals for the visitors.
Ellen Sharps, Cody Hughes and Tyler Price delivered the goals which secured maximum points for Northop Hall.
The hosts were 3-0 up before Mary Newman grabbed a 92nd minute consolation for the Powys visitors.
Hall’s Daisy Allen was shown a red card on the hour.
