Neil Gibson’s first match in charge of Wealdstone brought a 1-1 draw which lifted his team out of the National League relegation zone.
The former Prestatyn Town, Connah’s Quay Nomads and Flint Town United boss took charge at Grosvenor Vale this week and had just two training sessions prior to today’s home clash with Solihull Moors.
Alex Reid, making his second appearance since returning to the club on loan from Oldham on 23 January, needed only four minutes to put the hosts in front.
Wealdstone missed opportunities to add to their total and regretted it as the visitors drew level on the stroke of half-time, Alex Whitmore heading in at the back post.
Both teams hit the crossbar in the second half, but there was to be no winning goal.
The point edged Wealdstone up to fifth from bottom, out of the drop zone on goal difference.
Gibson said after the game he was delighted with the players’ effort and the encouragement the fans gave his team.
“As a first showing I’m really proud of the group and the way they responded to the two sessions we had this week,” he commented.
“We gave everything, were full of energy. Can we be better? Yes, but there were lots of little positives in the way we played.
“We’ve created 6 or 7 opportunities and if we’d taken one and made it 2-0, it could have been a different game.”
Wealdstone’s next game is on Tuesday at home to FA Cup heroes Tamworth, who exited the third round 3-0 against Tottenham, but took the Premier League side to extra time.
