FLASHBACK – 25 years ago: Porthmadog win in NWCFA Challenge Cup against club which no longer exists

Mike Davies scored for Porthmadog in the NWCFA Challenge Cup 25 years ago this week

Twenty-five years ago this week CPD Porthmadog celebrated an emphatic victory in the NWCFA Challenge Cup.

Colin Hawkins’ Cymru Alliance League side recorded a 5-2 home win over Colwyn Bay YMCA on December 3, 1999.

Here is a brief match report from the Porthmadog website – http://www.porthmadogfc.com

Porthmadog 5 (A Owen 3, M Davies, N Barry)
Colwyn Bay YMCA 2 (Hewitt, J Jones)

NWCFA Challenge Cup – December 3, 1999

Porthmadog, winners of North Wales Coast Challenge Cup in 1997, but slated by their manager because of recent poor displays, provided the perfect response with a 5-2 spectacular.

Taking on Colwyn Bay YMCA, the runaway leaders of the Tyn Lon Rover Welsh Alliance, Porthmadog slammed three goals inside half an hour thanks to Adrian Owen (2) and Mike Davies.

Colwyn closed up through Mark Hewitt and Jason Jones, but the home team confirmed their reaction to Colin Hawkins’ blast with conclusive late goals by Nigel Barry and Adrian Owen again.

What happened next?

  • In 1999-2000, Porthmadog finished fifth in the tier 2 Cymru Alliance
  • Adrian Owen was top scorer for the team that season with 18 goals in all competitions
  • Manager Colin Hawkins resigned in March and was replaced by Viv Williams, who initially took over on a caretaker basis.
  • Colwyn Bay YMCA finished runners-up in the Welsh Alliance behind invincible champions Halkyn United. After one more season in tier 3, YMCA were no more.
  • Colwyn Bay FC won the NWCFA Challenge Cup in 1999-2000
