It’s back – tomorrow sees the return of the NWCFA Senior Challenge Cup

This week sees the relaunch of a cup competition which has been off the North Wales football calendar for 12 years.

The last winners of the North Wales Coast Challenge Cup were Caernarfon Town, who defeated Bangor City on penalties in the 2014 final.

Caernarfon’s manager on that occasion was none other than Lee Dixon, now director of football at CPD Dinas Bangor City 1876.

First competed for in 1923-24 and won by Mold, the Challenge Cup was once one of the most prestigious knockout competitions in Wales.

But as the years went on, especially after the 1990s advent of the League of Wales and Cymru Alliance becoming bigger priorities for the higher level clubs, the tournament lost its appeal.

The higher-ranked clubs constantly fielded weakened sides, and eventually entries had become so low, by 2014 the competition was scrapped.

But now it is back and Wednesday night brings two opening round ties: Bangor City 1876 v NFA and Llandudno v Kinmel Bay.
