FLASHBACK – 25 years ago: Bangor City thrash Llandudno on their way to lifting Welsh Cup

WELSH CUP ROUND THREE – NOVEMBER 1999

BANGOR CITY 5 (Tidswell OG, Allen 2, Bird, Cross)
LLANDUDNO 0

REPORT: MIKE SMITH – CITIZENS CHOICE WEBSITE

Twenty five years ago this week Bangor City swept aside Llandudno on their way to winning the first Welsh Cup competition of the new millennium.

In the previous round, the Citizens had won 2-1 at Corwen Amateurs, while Tudno had hammered Mold Alexandra 8-0 and seen off British Aerospace 5-3 at previous stages.

On this November day, Bangor cantered into the final 16 without having to break sweat to eliminate a pretty ordinary Llandudno side.

Eighteen minutes had gone when a miskick from Mally Tidswell contrived an own goal and one-nil lead from a harmless Gavin Allen cross.

Five minutes later Sean Hazelden flicked on a corner which rebounded to Steve Bird and he scored from close range for a 2-0 advantage.

On the half hour Lewis Coady was clean through but fired at the keeper’s legs. Almost immediately Robbie Williams chipped just wide, then Paul Walker saved low down from a Matthew Cross header.

Before half time, Bird wasted a glorious opportunity and Allen took an excellent ball from Phil Johnson on the right but curled his effort wide. Then Paul Roberts had a well struck shot saved.

Half Time 2-0

Ten minutes into the second half Johnson created a clear opening for Allen to tap in for 3-0.

On the hour an Allen centre was met forcibly by Cross whose header left keeper Walker helpless.

Llandudno had their moments and the best of them followed next as Andy Mulliner made a good double save.

Coady cut through onto his favourite left foot and struck the ball cleanly, but unfortunately straight at Walker.

Then in the last minute or so Allen added a touch of realism to the scoreline with a fifth home goal after another good ball from midfield, this time from man of the match Johnson.
