FC Plas Madoc pull out of the North East Wales League Premier Division

FC Plas Madoc celebrate winning the North East Wales Football League Championship last season. Six months later their first team has folded

FC Plas Madoc have withdrawn their senior team from the North East Wales Football League.

The Wrexham area side won promotion to the Premier Division last season after topping the Championship table by a nine-point margin, but the current campaign had been a struggle,

The club confirmed to Grassroots North Wales that it has taken the first team out of the Premier, but will keep running their Under-19 side.

This season had been difficult for the senior team in the tier 4 Premier and a 7-2 defeat at Coedpoeth United in the NEWFA Horace Wynne Cup on October 12 proved their swansong.

FC Plas Madoc said there were a ‘number of factors’ behind the decision.

A statement said: “We have struggled this season to recruit players, we are in a really good catchment area, but we simply cannot compete with clubs in the area in terms of resources or facilities.

“We have struggled with injuries to key players, and with a lack of commitment from some of the squad we were forced to play games with injured players and U19s some of whom were maybe not ready for the step up to senior football.

“The U19s is still going and we are still on the lookout to build on that squad and we are looking at the future to maybe re-enter the pyramid.”

This is the second time in recent years that a Plas Madoc team has folded.

From Cefn Mawr, Wrexham, the club previously formed in 2017-18 and won the former North East Wales League in their first season.

They followed up by finishing top of the old Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Division One in 2018-19 without tasting a single defeat.

In the shortened 2019-20 campaign, Plas ended up 12th in the WNL Premier Division.

When football returned in 2021-22 after the 2020-21 campaign was cancelled due to the pandemic, Madoc was no more.

However, they returned as FC Plas Madoc in 2023-24.

They joined the tier 5 North East Wales Football League Championship and landed the title in a canter, winning 23 out of 24 matches and piling up 147 goals.

However, this season did not turn out so well. Many of the first team recently left the club, including goal-getters Nicky Williams, Ryan Jakovlevs and Craig Roberts, who switched to FC Queen’s Park when they knew Madoc’s fate was sealed.

FC Plas Madoc’s 2024-25 results have been expunged and a revised table has been put out on the Cymru Football App.
