JD Cymru North: Super sub Bellis strikes late as Denbigh edge Friday night thriller at Bangor

MATT JOHNSON caught all the thrills and spills at Bangor 1876 v Denbigh Town

JD CYMRU NORTH – OCTOBER 11

Bangor 1876 3 (Clarke 26, Blackwell-Jones 56, Culshaw 78)
Denbigh Town 4 (Brown 8, Davies 17, Fleming 67, Bellis 90+6)

Super sub Harrison Bellis made his first-ever tier 2 goal for Denbigh a memorable one as it ended up the 96th minute winner for his team at Bangor City Stadium.

Games like this prove why the Cymru North is so often labelled the most thrilling and competitive league in Welsh football.

It was tough on Bangor, who trailed 2-0 and 3-2 and looked set for a point only to be left stunned right at the end.

Credit to Denbigh, though, whose relentless attacking football earned them the points in a Friday night classic.

Bellis, who joined Town in the summer after scoring 68 goals for tier 5 CPD Y Glannau last term, had notched a hat-trick for Denbigh’s reserves six days earlier, but was yet to get off the mark for the first team. He chose the perfect occasion to break his duck.

Corrig McGonigle flicked an effort against the post for the home side early on before Denbigh took a seventh-minute lead.

Owen Davies ran through on goal and struck both posts before birthday boy Nathan Brown knocked the rebound home.

McGonigle fired over for the hosts before the visitors went two-up in the 17th minute, Sam Duffy’s run and assist enabling the in-form Davies to bag his fifth goal in as many games.

The home side hit back on 24 when defender Tomos Clarke headed home after a corner was not cleared.

Davies was denied by keeper Bradley Farrar in a one-on-one before the break to ensure it stood 2-1 to Dewi Llion’s men at the interval.

Ten minutes into the second half, it was all-square when the ever-consistent Mason Blackwell-Jones applied a cool finish.

The initiative looked to be with Bangor now, but in the 67th minute sub Paul Fleming made a dramatic entry for Town by starting and finishing a move in style to make it 3-2.

This corker of a game was end-to-end now and after Aaron Jones had saved magnificently from a McGonigle bicycle kick, Joe Culshaw made it three-apiece in the 78th minute.

The hosts pushed for the decider, the luckless McGonigle striking the bar from a free kick before Jones denied sub Dan Sullivan, but there was one final twist to come.

In the 96th minute, Bellis applied the finish to grab all three points for the visitors.

What a game! What a league!
