A close-fought Welsh Cup first round tie at Belle Vue went to penalties and saw Rhyl keeper Adam Reid emerge the hero with two crucial shoot-out saves.

Tier 3 beat Tier 2 as the Lilywhites advanced to round two of the national knockout.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

6 min: Rhyl’s forwards make a lively start. Good work from new signing Dylan Proctor gives Jonny Bravo Pinto half a chance, but the Portuguese lashes into the side-netting.

8 min: Mountain find the net after Jack Parry’s shot is kept out, Ben Richards puts away the rebound, but is adjudged offside.

14 min: Jack Sconce drills wide from 18 yards for the Cymru North visitors.

29 min – GOAL: Danny Clarke’s corner from the right leads to TOM KEMP netting from close range. RHYL 1 MOUNTAIN 0

Dylan Proctor had a fine debut for Rhyl 1879

32 min: Chance for Proctor as he wins the ball in a dangerous position, but his hurried lob clears the bar.

44 min: Sconce free kick from 20 yards flies over the top.

45 + 1: Reid keeps out a shot from Parry.

HALF-TIME: Rhyl 1 Mountain 0

49 min – GOAL: Mountain start the second half strongly and equalise following a controversial free kick. After what appeared a 50-50 challenge, referee John Andrew Jones gives the visitors a free kick which Sconce lobs into the box and AARON SIMPSON’S back-header finds the net.

73 min: After a spell of Mountain pressure, Rhyl threaten from a James Stevens corner which could have ended up anywhere but the away side clear the danger.

86 min: Kemp free kick is scrambled behind for a corner by keeper Reece Thompson.

90 min: Sconce flashes an effort wide before Reid goes down well to gather Alfie Clarke strike.
