Has former Wrexham star scored the most goals in a season by a North Wales woman player?

Jess Jones’ 52 goals for Llangefni Town in 2023-24 is one of the biggest totals registered by a woman player in North Wales for many years.

It is certainly the highest tally since Grassroots North Wales started keeping detailed records in 2016-17.

However, further research has revealed the overall record holder could be former Wrexham Ladies goal machine Lowri Edwards, who scored 65 times in 32 appearances back in 2011-12.

The first Welsh Premier Women’s League had been formed in 2009 and for the opening three seasons was split into North and South Conferences.

The winners of each conference would then play off in a national final at the end of the season to decide an overall Welsh champion.

Caernarfon Town won the first two Northern titles, in 2009-10 and 2010-11, but 2011-12 was Wrexham’s year.

The Red Dragons topped the Northern Conference table with six wins, a draw and just one loss, going on to meet Cardiff’s UWIC in the national final and losing 3-0, thus unfortunately also missing out on a place in Europe.

Wrexham also continued to compete in the North Wales Women’s League that season where Lowri Edwards piled on the goals.

Although her final total was 65, she did in fact score 72, but seven were expunged from the records due to Cefn Druids’ withdrawal from the league.

Wrexham were one of 12 teams which competed in the first-ever fully national Welsh Women’s Premier League in 2012-13, Llandudno Junction, Caernarfon Town and Northop Hall the other Northern sides involved.

Managed by Dave Taylor, Wrexham finished an excellent third, Edwards netting 26 goals in 24 games and strike partner Sydney Hinchcliffe 24 in 22.

That third place remains the club’s joint-best finish in the top-flight, matched by the current Wrexham AFC Women side in their 2023-24 debut Adran Premier season.

The 2011-12 champions – players and management

As for the original Wrexham, they withdrew from the WPWL in 2015-16 citing a lack of players.

Lowri Edwards finished playing football around this time and is believed to be no longer involved in the game.

However, what she achieved in that 2011-12 campaign has secured her legendary status in North Wales women’s football.

No doubt the likes of Jess Jones will see that mark of 65 goals as one to challenge in the future.
