Farewell to CPD Y Felinheli’s amazing manager Euron Davies

Felinheli manager Euron Davies with the North Wales Junior Cup

North Wales football is in mourning following the sudden death of one of its longest-serving managers.

Euron Davies, who had led CPD Y Felinheli since 2011-12, has passed away aged just 46.

Today’s Ardal North West League match between Felinheli and Flint Mountain was called off as a mark of respect.

This season was Euron’s 13th in charge of the Cae Seilo club.

Although at the wrong end of the table, the club has been fighting hard to retain their Tier 3 status, winning four of their last five home games.

Felin also had the honour of hosting Cymru Premier club Newtown in this season’s Welsh Cup competition – one of their biggest-ever occasions.

A former youth at Caernarfon Town, and player and manager with CPD Llanberis, when Euron took over at Felinheli in 2011-12, it signalled a major rise in the club’s fortunes.

Felin won back-to-back NWCFA Junior Cups in 2012-13 and 2013-14, completing a treble in the latter season by being crowned Caernarfon and District League champions and Llun Mewn Ffram Cup winners.

The club returned to the Gwynedd League and landed the double of league championship and League Cup in 2015-16.

Felinheli went up to Welsh Alliance Division Two and won that title in 2019-20.

They have been in the Tier 3 Ardal North West since 2021-22, so Euron took the club up three levels of the pyramid in his 13 years at the helm.

In a tribute on the club’s Facebook account, CPD Y Felinheli wrote: “Trist iawn ydy gorfod cyhoeddi’r newyddion am farwolaeth sydyn ein rheolwr, Euron.

“Daeth ei weledigaeth â cyfnod llewyrchus iawn i’r clwb yn ystod ei gyfnod trawsnewidiol fel rheolwr.

“Rheolwr cadarn, doeth, a ffrind i bawb. A’i hiwmor yn liwgar trwy’r cwbl. Mae ein dyled fel clwb yn enfawr iddo.

“Colled mawr i’r clwb, i’r pentref, ac i’w deulu a’i ffrindiau oll.”

“It is very sad to have to announce the news of the sudden death of our manager, Euron.

“His vision brought a very prosperous period for the club during his transformative period as manager.

“A solid, wise manager and a friend to everyone. And his humour was colourful through it all. Our debt as a club is huge to him.

“A great loss to the club, the village and to all his family and friends.”

As editor of Grassroots North Wales website, I always found Euron a pleasure to work with.

I interviewed him a number of times over the years, including one on occasion at half time on the balcony at Nantporth during the Junior Cup Final when Felinheli were 5-0 up!

He was immensely proud when Felin won two Junior Cups under his leadership, as well as the Welsh Alliance Division Two title in 2019-20.

I also had a great chat with him when Felinheli celebrated their 40th anniversary as a club in 2017, as well as before they faced Newtown in the Welsh Cup this season.

As one of North Wales’ longest-serving managers, Euron was a calm, jovial character who loved his club and everyone involved with it.

He once told me he was grateful to Grassroots North Wales for keeping the club under the radar most of the time – which is what he wanted – but was always generous in its publicity when the club achieved something big.

A gentleman of North Wales football who will be very sadly missed – RIP Euron Wyn Davies.
