North Wales Coast East League Premier: wins for top trio Cerrig, Phoenix and Junction

Jamie Jones notched the winner for Penmaenmawr

NORTH WALES COAST EAST LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

Penmaenmawr Phoenix 2 (M Williams 7, J Jones 9)
Mochdre Sports 1 (Smyth 3)

Two evergreen players with a combined age of 77 delivered the goals which clinched title contenders Penmaenmawr a derby victory on Saturday.

Jamie Jones, 40, and 37-year-old Mike Williams both netted within the first nine minutes at Cae Sling, this after Chris Smyth edged Mochdre Sports ahead with just three on the clock.

The top of the Premier makes pretty enthralling reading with leading trio Cerrigydrudion, Phoenix and Llandudno Junction all on 32 points. Leaders on goal difference Cerrig have played 13 games, Pen 16 and Junction 15.

Saturday’s game at Penmaenmawr started at a fast pace with both teams going for it from the off – and it didn’t take long before the deadlock was broken.

A scrappy bit of play in midfield saw Robert Tudor break away for Mochdre. He played a great through pass for Smyth to run onto and finish one-on-one against onrushing keeper Elliot Jarvis, who got a hand on the shot, but the ball found its way into the bottom corner.

Phoenix came flying out from the restart and began to put constant pressure on the Mochdre defence.

A corner for the home team in the seventh minute from Jamie Jones was flicked on by Lee Stokes at the front post for veteran and ex-Welsh international Mike Williams to head home at the back stick for his fifth goal of the season.

Pen continued on the front foot. A high press from Dan Williams in the ninth minute pressured Sports’ keeper into a panicked clearance which found Mike Williams, who played a cross-field pass to Jamie Jones, and he lobbed over Nic Bould at the edge of the area and ran onto the ball to finish into an empty net.

The game settled down and both teams tried to play football as the soft pitch began to cut up. Logan Williams and Ian Pattinson got a real foothold in the midfield allowing Pen’s frontline to play with freedom.

At the start of the second half, Mochdre began to control some of the play, creating a couple of half-chances, but Pen’s defence were up for the challenge and putting bodies on the line.

Mike Williams was unlucky in the 75th minute when the centre back found himself unmarked at the back post from a corner and he made no mistake of finding the net, but a flick on from Mezz Knight at the front stick resulted in the referee blowing for offside.

In form 16-year-old Corey Lundstram almost put the game to bed in the 88th minute when his effort was saved by Bould. Lundstram showed great composure to control the rebound from the save and dribble past the keeper but with pressure from Sports’ defence his second effort sailed over the bar.

CPD Cerrigydrudion 4 Bro Cernyw 3

Six of the seven goals in this game arrived in the first half, Premier leaders Cerrig taking a 4-2 advantage into the break.

Tomos Watkin-Jones put the hosts ahead, Osian Roberts and Robin Hughes turned things around to edge Bro in front, but Watkin-Jones, Iorwerth Jones and Tomos Tryfan Jones (penalty) hit back to put Cerrig in command.

William Hughes pulled one back for Cernyw midway through the second half, but the hosts took the points.

Llandudno Junction 4 CPD Llansannan 0

Joint-leaders Junction were too good for the visitors in this one, Harry Kirkham giving the Railwaymen an interval lead before Bryan Roberts, Dean Seager and sub Jack Williams scored in the second period.

Llanfairfechan Town 1 Llandyrnog United 0

Club stalwart Curtis Murray bagged the 82nd minute goal which ensured managerless Llanfairfechan took the spoils at the Recreation Ground.

The home side, who announced the departure of boss Glyn Bellfield in the week, picked up a welcome three points over a Llandyrnog side which had upset previoously unbeaten NFA the weekend before.

Dyrny had Neil Brown red-carded in the 90th minute.

Meliden 3 Rhuddlan Town 0

Despite playing with 10 men for well over an hour after Lewis Thompson was red-carded in the 26th minute, Meliden went on to claim the victory which lifted them up to fifth.

Following a goalless first half, Lucas Edwards nudged the Miners in front with 51 gone.

Edwards struck again on the hour from a rebound after his initial penalty was saved and sub Macauley Ross made the points safe with an 88th minute third.

New signing Mackenzie Collier had a promising debut in goal for Rhuddlan.
