PREMIER DIVISION

Rhostyllen 1 Corwen 6

Main Report: Gavin Billington

Can anyone stop Corwen in what seems like a relentless and inevitable surge towards the Premier Division title?

On Saturday, Jamie Hulse’s leaders travelled to second-place Rhostyllen and emerged emphatic 6-1 winners.

It was the fifth time they have scored six goals in a game this term, four of those occasions in the league.

Corwen have won all eight league matches so far in a season where they aiming to bounce back instantly from relegation to Tier 4.

In all competitions, they have played 17 games, won 13, lost four and scored 83 goals.

Saturday’s victory was arguably their biggest statement yet of 2023-24.

The game nearly had to be postponed after a family emergency meant the appointed referee was unable to officiate; however John Spender answered the eleventh hour call and took on the whistle duties.

The hosts were wearing their claret and blue home kit for this game, which referee Spender deemed too similar to Corwen’s red and black. And with the league rules stating the home team has to change when there is a clash, the home side switched their claret shirts for sky blue ones nine minutes into the game.

Prior to the shirt change, a low ball was played to home striker Tom Douglas, who was able to get through on goal and slotted the ball beyond Evan Parry. Despite Corwen’s claims for offside the goal stood.

Twenty minutes in good build up play from the visitors led to Robbie Williams hitting a shot into the ground, which bounced up and beyond goalkeeper Mark Richards, but was cleared off the line by Dean Jones. In the aftermath Scott Evans was brought down; however Corwen’s penalty claims were waived away.

The hosts called for a foul in the away side’s half at the start of a Corwen attack six minutes later, but the referee was not interested, allowing Alex Webster to play in Owen Cordiner, who set up Robbie Williams to slot home for 1-1.

With six minutes of the first period to play Corwen found the net again, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

The last action of the half saw Douglas curling an edge of the box free kick around the wall, but keeper Parry pounced on the ball.

It remained one-apiece until the 65th minute, when Tom Mann played in Cordiner, who was just able to stay onside and get one-on-one with Mark Richards. placing beyond the Rhostyllen number one to give Corwen the lead.

Two minutes after taking the lead there was another great attacking move from the away side and the move bore fruit when Scott Evans picked out Cordiner, who was able to get free in the penalty area again and slot past the keeper for 3-1.

Robbie Williams added a fourth when he curled the ball beyond Richards and into the back of the net, with Dean Jones desperate attempts to clear only rewarded by crashing into the post and having to be substituted.

Corwen made it 5-1 on the counter, Tom Mann crossing to Cordiner, who had his back to goal and expertly turned on a sixpence and scored from close range for his hat-trick.

In the 90th minute Webster played in Henry Evans, who collected the ball on the touchline before unleashing a low angled shot into the far corner of the net.

Connah’s Quay Town 1 Caerwys 3

One of the best wins of the season for a Caerwys side which avenged an earlier campaign home defeat at the hands of Town.

CHAMPIONSHIP

Acton 3 FC Plas Madoc 4

Although leaders Acton reached 100 league goals for the season in just their 16th game, it was third-place Plas Madoc who notched the points at Rhosesni High School.

Jamie Williams was the last-gasp hero for Plas with a 93rd minute decider.

Earlier, Craig Roberts and Oli Roberts both netted to put Madic two-up on 18 minutes before Alix Godfrey hit back for Acton.

Josh Williams made it 3-1 on 34, but Andy Bithell brought Acton back to within one before the interval.

Bithell struck again a minute into the second half to make it level and it now turned into a real battle before Madoc clinched it in the 93rd.
