Bangor get pegged back by last-gasp equaliser; Trophy calamity for Llandudno and Nomads

A stunning 90th minute free kick from Llanfair captain Mary Bailey denied Bangor all three points at Treborth.

After taking a 12th minute lead through player of the match Alys Davis, the hosts’ Ella Jones then missed a penalty close to the hour before the visitors were able to nab a draw.

Bangor coach Aron Griffith said after the game: “Always devastating to concede in the last moments of a game, but that’s football for you.

“Besides this, today’s match was full of positives for us and very little negatives. I think we bossed the first half very well, creating a bagful of chances and Llanfair came back at us in the second half as equal as we were in the second half too. Also, a missed penalty, but again that’s football.

“Really pleased with how we played, we’ve gone from a team who were panicking and hoofing the ball, to a team who look to play the ball from the back and hit them counters, everyone should be proud of the shift they did last week and the same story this week, shows we are stepping in the right direction.

“Very deserved POTM for Alys, each week she puts 110% in so very impressed with her development in her new role.

“Looking forward for the return fixture in March, as Llanfair are a challenging team to play against.

“Two games left of this year so we’re looking at carrying the momentum forward and finishing 2023 on a high, hopefully.”

Swansea City 13

To stand a chance against a team like Swansea City you need your strongest XI – and especially a solid goalkeeper.

Unfortunately, Llandudno’s regular keeper Meg Robinson withdrew through illness on the morning of the game, and another gloveswoman, Caitlyn Bibby-Fry, was unavailable, so the hosts were forced to field a couple of stand-ins over the 90 minutes at the OPS Wind Arena..

The result was a painfully one-sided cup tie which produced a goals number Swansea will no doubt see as lucky, but which Tudno will feel lived up to its name.

Last season, Llandudno had won 2-1 away at Swansea in this competition, producing one of the best results in North Wales women’s football history.

Today was an entirely different story.

Aberystwyth Town 5

Nomads may well fancy themselves as the best side in Genero Adran North, but against top flight teams, they have come up short twice this season.

After losing 3-0 to The New Saints in the Welsh Cup in October, they were thrashed 5-0 at home by Aberystwyth in the Adran Trophy today.

Neither TNS or Aber are among the elite sides yet in the Adran Premier, so one wonders how Nomads might have fared against Cardiff or Swansea.

After a fairly even first half hour, Gwenllian Jones took centre stage for the visitors with a hat-trick before the interval.

Rebecca Mathias and Imi Scourfield also netted in the second half.
