32 games, 31 wins, 93 points out of 96 – Holywell Town’s phenomenal league run continues

To win 31 out of 32 matches in a highly competitive league over a 12-month period is quite a feat.

That is what Holywell Town have achieved in the tier 2 Cymru North between August 20, 2022 and this weekend – September 8, 2023.

It is a stunning record. To be that consistent over such a lengthy spell is downright phenomenal.

So good are those stats, it does make me wonder how many other teams in Wales, the rest of the UK, Europe or even the entire world currently boast a run that impressive.

My guess is not very many.

We are talking the joint-second highest level league in the Welsh pyramid here. Lots of very good sides involved.

In 2009-10 and 2010-11, the now disbanded FC Nomads of Connah’s Quay won 43 of their first 44 league games – but with all due respect, they played at tier 6 and 7 in those two seasons.

It is unlikely anyone has put together such a remarkable streak as Holywell in the 33-year history of the Cymru Alliance/Cymru North, although between March 26, 2022 and April 15, 2023, last season’s champions Colwyn Bay won 30, drew 3 and lost just 1 of 34 games.

In that sequence, Bay won 25 in a row and their only defeat came against…..Holywell, who achieved the exact same stat and finished runners-up to the Seagulls.

Holywell’s sole league loss in their last 32 outings was a 2-1 reverse at home to Llandudno on April 7, 2023.

In those 32 games they have netted 89 goals and conceded just 15. At one stage they did not let in a single goal in nine matches – well in excess of 800 minutes.

Johnny Haseldin’s side, who have also lifted the NEWFA Challenge Cup in these past 12 months, should take a massive bow.
