October 17, 2015 – Cymru Alliance League

A sixth win in seven league outings moved Holywell up to second in the Cymru Alliance on this day five years ago.

Second-from-bottom Rhayader were the visitors to Halkyn Road, where early on the in-form Steve Lewis went close three times for the home side, his latter effort well saved by Luke Evans.

Paul D Williams had a shot kept out after good work by Tom McElmeel and Connor Littler to set him up.

In the 31st minute Johnny Haseldin’s men took a deserved lead through McElmeel, who tapped home at the far post after the ball was played across the face of goal through a ruck of players.

The goal brought an even greater belief to the players, Littler being denied by a double phenomenal stop from Evans.

Town doubled their lead on 42 minutes through Lewis, whose glancing header from Josh Roberts’ free kick beat the keeper and hit the back of the net.

The Wellmen made it three on the stroke of half time. A great ball into the box by Tony Roebuck saw Lewis lay the ball off to Ryan Davidson, who placed into the bottom far corner to give Evans no chance.

Half time: Holywell 3 Rhayader 0

Lewis and Littler both went close before sub Graeme Williams put away number four.

Williams had only been on the pitch a few minutes before his bullet header flew into the net from a Steve Thomas corner.

A few minutes later, Town made it 5-0 through McElmeel. Phil Lloyd ran into the box and was bundled over by the Rhayader centre back.

The referee pointed straight to the spot and McElmeel made no mistake.

Gethin Jones pulled one back for Rhayader with 78 minutes played before the last real chance of the match fell to Graeme Williams, who headed wide from a Lewis cross.
