Flashback – 10 years ago: The perfect 10 for Bangor City

Ten years ago this weekend Bangor City completed the perfect TEN as they made it TEN wins out of TEN in the Welsh Premier – in the TENTH month of the year.

With Robins boss Andy Cale on England duty former blues manager Lee Williams took charge and opted for a 5-3-2 formation with ex-Citizen Dave Swanick at sweeper. 

In the first 10 (well, it had to be didn’t it) seconds City unhinged the offside ploy and – from Newtown’s point of view – disaster followed.

On 10 minutes (when else) Bangor had the lead.  

A deep Chris Roberts cross from the left was volleyed home by Alan Bull to the delight of the vast majority of the 850-plus crowd.

Bangor kept up the pressure and on the half-hour Swanick fouled Bull in the box – penalty. Dave Morley duly dispatched the spot-kick for a two-nil lead.

Four minutes later Bangor went three-up as No 10 Nicky Ward cut in from the right and side-stepped two Robins defenders to lash the ball beyond Dave Roberts.

Peter Hoy had an effort scraped off the line before Roberts saved from Ward.

In the final action of the half, Bangor won a fourth corner which Hoy headed home but referee Dean John blew for a foul and Newtown breathed a sigh of relief.

No changes at the interval but more of the same seemed on the cards as Bull slid Jamie Reed in on the right, but he fired over at the St Paul’s End.

The visitors had switched from 5-3-2 to 4-4-2 with Swanick now at right-back and the offside trap now snared blues strikers more than it had in the first period.

On 62 minutes the hints of a revival became a reality as left back Paul Keddle scored from close range to reduce the deficit.

Bangor boss Nev Powell responded with a double substitution as Sion Edwards and Eddie Jebb came on for Les Davies and Chris Jones.

On 65 minutes a change at the back for Newtown as Sean Jones replaced Swanick.

With 20 minutes left Newtown won a free-kick on the left and with no-one really ready Craig Whitfield got the nod from Dean John and netted from 25 yards to alarm the home support.

If this did anything though it seemed to sting Bangor into action and Roberts’ had to be alert to keep out Hoy’s long range effort before two minutes after Newtown’s second the hosts grabbed a fourth.

Bull cut in from the right to beat Roberts with a low drive to the delight of the St Paul’s Enders basking in the Autumn sun.

After 78 minutes Bangor went 5-2 ahead as Hoy’s long throw was cracked home by James Brewerton to seal the victory.

Brewerton was denied a second by a goal-line clearance late on.
