Colwyn Bay Cricket Club’s women have won the national Welsh Hundred Plate competition for a second year running.
In Sunday’s finals day in South Wales, Bay defeated Pentyrch by a single run in the semis before going on to see off Bronwydd in the grand finale.
It brings to a climax a remarkable season for the Bay ladies, who were crowned champions of the North Wales Women’s League West division before then landing the overall North Wales title for a second year, having shared the honour with Bethesda in 2022.
After a thrilling semi-final success over Pentyrch on Sunday, Bay’s win against Bronwydd in the final was a bit more clear cut.
The Carmarthenshire side won the toss and put their North Walian opponents into bat.
Bay scored 67-5 off their 100 balls for a net score of 242.
Charlotte Bennett top-scored with six runs (net), while Buddug Phillips took an impressive 3-12 for Bronwydd.
In reply, the West Walians were limited to 71-8 for a net 231, meaning Colwyn Bay were the winners by 11 runs.
Star bowler for Bay was Sue Wolfendale with 3-6, Jane Smith taking 3-17 and there was a wicket for Amy Kennedy. All the Colwyn attack bowled tidily with the fielding top class.
Sunday was a truly amazing day for the club, as Colwyn Bay’s men lifted the Welsh Cup, beating mighty Swansea in the final at Usk.
It was the second time in their history Bay had scooped the national trophy and only the seventh occasion in 51 years a North Wales club had achieved the feat. Brymbo did it three times and Llandudno and Northop Hall once apiece.
