CLWB Y MIS – CLUB OF THE MONTH: JULY/AUGUST 2023

NFA (Tier 4 – North Wales Coast East Premier Division)

With seven straight wins since the end of July, there could only be one clear winner of the first Clwb y Mis/Club of the Month award of the 2023-24 season.

Promoted from tier 5 North Wales Coast East Division One last term, NFA strengthened considerably over the summer and have a 100% league and cup record so far.

Kicking off with an expected 6-0 Welsh Cup win over Penrhyn Bay in July, the Rhyl-based side began their campaign in the North Wales Coast East Premier Division by thrashing a well-respected Llandudno Junction 5-0 away – an extremely impressive result.

Next up was a much less clear-cut success as NFA trailed Meliden 1-0 and needed a 96th minute winner from Antonio Jacovelli over their 10-man opponents to edge a 2-1 triumph.

NFA advanced to the Welsh Cup first round proper on August 19 with a comfortable 4-1 beating of Llandyrnog United, then it was back to the league and a 3-0 verdict over Kinmel Bay.

On August 26, the light-blues got past Rhuddlan Town 4-3 in the FAW Trophy, then this Tuesday whipped the same opposition 8-2 away in the league.

Played 7 Won 7 Goals For 32 Goals Conceded 7. Can’t ask for more than that.

Already, a repeat of St Asaph City’s dominance last season at the same level is being talked about.

Top scorer Antonio Jacovelli

OTHER IMPRESSIVE CLUB PERFORMANCES

Caernarfon Town (Tier 1 – Cymru Premier League)

To go unbeaten in their first four matches in the top flight of Welsh football represents a really good start to the season for Caernarfon Town.

Starting off with a ruthless 4-0 away victory at newly-promoted Colwyn Bay, the Canaries followed up with a superb 2-1 win over jinx side Newtown at The Oval.

It was so nearly three out of three for Richard Davies’ men when they led 1-0 at European stars Haverfordwest County, until the hosts salvaged a point with a last-gasp free kick.

And then on Tuesday, Caernarfon came from behind to earn a fully-deserved 1-1 draw against a Bala Town side which had beaten the Cofis five times in a row.

After a disappointing 2022-23, and having to bed in a number of new players this season, Caernarfon were tipped by many to struggle, but so far they have shoved the words of the critics firmly down their throats and with better luck could be on maximum points right now.

Nantlle Vale (Tier 3 – Ardal North West)

Tremendous start for the Penygroes outfit.

Undefeated in four in the league, they have also won Welsh Cup ties against Llannerchymedd and Nefyn United. Five wins and one draw in total so far.

Airbus UK Broughton (Tier 2 – Cymru North)

After last season’s nightmare relegation experience Airbus have bounced back by winning all five matches so far in the Cymru North.

Some of the newer faces and younger prospects have slotted in really well for Mark Allen’s side, whose only disappointment was a 5-0 Nathaniel MG Cup exit at Colwyn Bay.

Holywell Town (Tier 2 – Cymru North)

Despite losing their opening match 3-2 at home to Bangor 1876 in the Nathaniel MG Cup, the Wellmen have responded positively with four straight league wins and look to be getting stronger all the time.

Rhos Aelwyd (Tier 3 – Ardal North East)

No losses in six so far for Rhos, who have got through two rounds of the Welsh Cup and won two and drawn two in Ardal NE. Best result was a 2-1 triumph at Cefn Albion.

Llangefni Town (Tier 3 – Ardal North West)

Top of the Ardal NW with no defeats in five, their only disappointment was an early Welsh Cup departure at Pwllheli.

Bow FC (Tier 5 – North Wales Coast East Division One)

A 100% league record – five wins and 35 goals scored, just three conceded.

Only loss was in the Welsh Cup, a narrow 3-2 reverse at higher level Penmaenmawr.

Star turns include ex-TNS, Llandudno and Bangor City midfield ace Robbie Parry – seven goals in five games.

Llandudno Amateurs (Tier 5 – North Wales Coast East Division One)

Began the season by pushing tier 4 Cerrigydrudion all the way in the FAW Welsh Cup before losing out on spot kicks.

Since then the Amateurs have had five straight wins – four out of four in the league with 17 goals scored and 0 conceded. Also defeated Llysfaen 6-2 in the FAW Trophy.

Caer Clwyd (Tier 5 – North Wales Coast Division One)

Lost to Rhos United in July Welsh Cup tie, but have sprung to life since with seven points out of nine in the league and a great FAW Amateur Trophy success over Glan Conwy.

Acton (Tier 5 – North East Wales League Championship)

Top of the Championship with four wins, a draw and no defeats with 32 goals scored and just five conceded.

Heavy loss to Rhostyllen in the NEWFA Challenge Cup was perhaps to be expected given the calibre of opposition.

Nefyn United (Tier 4 – North Wales Coast West Premier Division)

Were beaten at tier 3 Nantlle Vale in the Welsh Cup despite putting up a great battle, but Nefyn have recorded really impressive league wins at Cemaes Bay and Llanberis and seen off Penrhyndeudraeth at home.
Da iawn Y Penwaig.

Holyhead Town (Tier 5 – North Wales Coast West Division One)

Put up an heroic Welsh Cup performance against higher-tier Llandudno Junction only to lose on penalties.

Have won both their league games against Llangoed and Gaerwen, plus enjoyed an earlier Welsh Cup success against Bethesda Rovers.

Great to see the Harbourmen do well.
