Llay Welfare Vets manager Jonny Taylor (on ball) saw his team battle for a 3-3 draw at Buckley

NORTH EAST WALES VETERANS LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

Buckley Town Vets 3 (Gavin Roberts 35 & 39; Adam Funnell 86)
Llay Welfare Vets 3 (Gareth Williams 9 & 54; Dan Hughes 60)

A six-goal thriller at The Globe on Wednesday night ended all-square.

In pouring rain, Llay made the better start when they took a ninth-minute lead, Gareth Williams with a superb one-touch curling finish from the edge of the 18-yard box.

Buckley roared back with two goals in four minutes from Gavin Roberts. The second was a towering header following an excellent first-time cross from the right.

Into the second half, and it was fast becoming a battle of two strikers.

On 54 minutes, Gareth Williams levelled for Llay with another tremendous finish about 20 yards.

Then it was Welfare’s turn to celebrate being in front, Danny Hughes putting them 3-2 up on the hour with another quality effort from 18 yards out.

It looked like an away win was on the cards until Adam Funnell made it three-apiece four minutes from the end.

Llay manager Jonny Taylor pointed out he was missing a few key players on the evening but praised both sides for putting on a good contest.

Next up for Llay is a home test against Mochdre Vets on September 17.
