Goalkeeper Keighan Jones has announced on social media tonight that he is leaving Holywell Town.
Jones, 26, joined the Wellmen early in 2021-22 and has been a virtual ever-present over the past two seasons, making 70 league and cup appearances.
Formerly with Chester City, Airbus UK Broughton, Caernarfon Town, Conwy Borough, Bala Town, Colwyn Bay, Corwen, Rhyl and Brickfield Rangers, Jones looked to have found his ‘happy place’ when he signed for Holywell, where he was outstanding for the last two campaigns and became a massive fans’ favourite.
Last season he won the Cymru North Golden Glove for the most clean sheets (17) and helped Town win the NEWFA Challenge Cup.
He also played a major role in the Wellmen winning an unprecedented 25 league games in a row and finishing runners-up in the table.
This week, with the club’s other first-team keeper Tyler French suffering a summer injury, Holywell manager Johnny Haseldin brought in the experienced Shaun Pearson from Llandudno to create competition for Jones.
Tonight, Jones announced he is leaving Holywell.
He Tweeted: “A missive (sic) thank you to @HolywellTownFC for the past couple of seasons I have had with you, I thank the fans massively for the support you have shown me from when I first come in until now.
“I’m leaving due to circumstances changing at the club and I wish you all the best – Jesus (the nickname given to him by the fans due to his long hair and beard).”
Holywell manager Haseldin said he has reluctantly accepted Jones’ decision, adding he will be released next week.
Haseldin added: “He’s been absolutely brilliant for me and I’m very sorry to see him leave. Great goalkeeper and a great lad.”
New signing Pearson played between the sticks for Holywell today in a 3-2 Nathaniel MG Cup defeat to Bangor 1876.
