Top 10 goals in North Wales women’s football this season – as chosen by Grassroots NW

There were some great goals scored this season across the Genero Adran North and the North Wales Women’s League.
Choosing the very best 10 is impossible, as unlike with Match of the Day, we do not see the majority of net-finders.
However, through a mixture of attending live games, seeing some goals on video and checking back through many reports, Grassroots North Wales has chosen it’s finest 10 from the ladies in 2022-23.
1 Hana Wellings (Trearddur Bay v LLANYSTUMDWY – North Wales League, March 26, 2023)

This was John Barnes (Brazil v England, Maracana Stadium 1984) and Ricky Villa (Tottenham v Man City FA Cup Final replay winner, Wembley 1981) rolled into one!
Hana Wellings’ wonder goal was scored in the beautiful setting of Lon Isallt, Trearddur Bay.
The midfield ace received the ball just inside the opposition half, dribbled past what seemed the entire Bay side before veering a little wide inside the box, but then cutting inside and applying the finish.
Although Llan lost 3-1, it was an amazing consolation to take home.
Thanks to team secretary Dylan Parry for filming this stunning solo goal and sharing it.
2 Emma Roberts (AMLWCH TOWN v Llangefni Town – Welsh Cup, September 16, 2022)

Absolute perfection from Emma, whose free kick from all of 25 yards sailed into the goal past a very capable goalkeeper.
Sometimes we see free-kick goals which are not particularly well hit, but still find the net.
This one could not have been struck better. It rocketed into the goal and was one of the highlights of Amlwch’s 4-1 victory. S4C were there to film it.
3 Kelsey Davies (Swansea City v LLANDUDNO – Adran Trophy last 16 – November 20, 2022)

Even the opposition applauded this one in their match report, which could not have been easy to write after the Swans became the first of the ‘big three’ South Wales sides ever to lose to Llandudno in any competition.
Dismissed as massive underdogs before travelling, Tudno were level at 1-1 before Davies won the tie with a magnificent strike from distance which gave the keeper no hope.
4 Chelsea Evans (CPD Y RHYL 1879 v Airbus – Genero Adran North, February 5, 2023)

This was all about the moment – although it was a tremendous goal as well.
Rhyl had squandered a 3-1 lead and it stood all-square entering the dying seconds.
Suddenly substitute Chelsea Evans received the ball on the edge of the box and had one thing on her mind – shoot and win the game.
Her right-foot effort flew above the keeper and in off the bar to seal a dramatic 4-3 victory for the Lilywhites. The crowd went wild at Belle Vue.
5 Sade Benjamin (Flint Town United v NFA – North Wales League, November 27, 2022)

Goal machine Sade specialises in scoring from long-distance free kicks, although she can produce any type of finish when called upon.
In this game at Flint, a corner from Sade was returned to her deep on the left.
Calm as you like, she whipped in a deep ball towards the back post which flew into the net. Totally meant, totally Sade. Great goal, great season.
6 TJ Dickens (WREXHAM v Connah’s Quay Nomads – Genero Adran North, March 26, 2023)

Dead-ball specialist opens the scoring on a day where more than 9,500 attended the Racecourse to see Wrexham’s women receive the Genero Adran North title.
Some blamed the Nomads goalkeeper for misjudging Dickens’ early free kick, but I thought it was a perfectly-struck right-foot screamer from the left which gathered pace as it blasted into the net.
It was also an ingenious tactic to test the keeper’s nerves early on a big occasion.
7 Rosie Hughes (FLINT TOWN UNITED v Denbigh Town, North Wales League, March 26, 2023)

Teenager Rosie has been one of the finds of the season in North Wales senior football.
Her attacking midfield displays for Flint have been sensational and this goal against Denbigh was a true ‘worldy’ (I don’t like that word but the Flint crew used it to describe this).
Rosie connected from about 20 yards out with an unstoppable shot which arrowed into the net over the keeper’s bonce. The 17-year-old prospect finished Flint’s top-scorer on 10 goals.
8 Laura Williams (CPD Y RHYL 1879 v NFA – Welsh Cup round one, October 9, 2022)

A cracking Welsh Cup tie between two good fellow town sides was decided in the 24th minute.
The outstanding Rachael Thomas was razor-sharp in intercepting a loose ball and heading on for Williams, who from the left, about 20 yards from goal, sent a magnificent shot high into the net just beyond the keeper’s fingertips.
Laura made a habit of netting some beauties with her trusty left boot this term.
9 Indie Hassall (LLANDUDNO v CPD Y Rhyl – Genero Adran North, September 4, 2022)

The two-goal hero of Llandudno’s title decider win the previous season began the current campaign where she left off.
New Zealander Indie cut in from the left-hand side and sent a magnificent right-foot shot into the top corner.
Tudno won 8-0 on the day and there were a few handy goals scored, but Hassall’s was the classiest of the lot.
10 Katie Midwinter (Airbus v CPDM Y FELINHELI – Genero Adran North, Feb 26, 2023)

In a 5-0 win away to Airbus which saw Ffion Williams notch a hat-trick for the visitors, Y Felinheli winger Katie Midwinter gave a reminder of her ability to score from anywhere when she delivered an exquisite chip from the right over the goalkeeper and into the far top corner of the net.
For a player who has become known throughout her career for scoring spectacular goals, this was the latest gem.
