Trearddur Bay have done the double in their comeback season.
Nick Dumbarton’s side added the North Wales Coast West Division One Cup to their league title at the weekend with a penalty shoot-out victory over Cemaes Bay.
After taking a break from football at senior’s men’s level in 2021-22, Trearddur certainly returned with a bang this term – new management, new players, new outlook….and they also dropped the United of the past and became just Trearddur Bay FC.
The first team now hopes to rise up the pyramid again, just like they did in the last decade when the highlight was finishing tier 3 Welsh Alliance League champions.
The star of that 2015-16 campaign was 48-goal top scorer Asa Thomas, and seven years on the pride of Holyhead again led the Bay’s charge to the tier 5 double with his remarkable 75 goals.
With the Division One championship already secured, Trearddur knew they would have it tough in Saturday’s final at Lon Groes, Gaerwen, against a Cemaes outfit which finished runners-up in the league.
The game started well for the Beachboys when Ry Lees put them ahead in the 19th minute after a scramble in the Cemaes box.
Chances were few and far between for the rest of the half and the interval arrived with the score still 1-0.
Both teams cancelled each other out for long periods after the break and it looked like it was Trearddur’s day when they still led entering added time.
But Cemaes broke opposition hearts when Cian Owen scored in the 96th minute to force extra time.
Cemaes started the brighter in the first period and it paid off in the 98th minute when Tom Wood’s 21st goal of the season put the School Lane side 2-1 up.
The lead didn’t last long as Thomas brought Bay level in the 100th minute.
Mel McGinness – SCORED (1-0 TB)
Keenan Downey – SCORED (1-1)
Myles Jones – SCORED (2-1 TB)
Rhys Lloyd – HIT BAR; RETAKE SAVED BY PAUL PRITCHARD (2-1)
Ry Lees – SCORED (3-1 TB)
Ryan Folksman – SCORED (3-2)
Luke Roberts – SCORED (4-2)
Cian Owen – SCORED (4-3)
Asa Thomas – SCORED (5-3)
So a domestic double for Trearddur, plus excellent showings in national competitions the Welsh Cup and FAW Trophy, winning FIVE ties against teams from a higher level.
