REPORTS IN BRIEF – WEDNESDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

NORTH WALES WOMEN’S LEAGUE

TABLE UP TO AND INCLUDING WEDNESDAY, MAY 17. SOURCE: http://www.allwalessport.co.uk

Amlwch Town 2 (Williams, Ridges)
Llanystumdwy 0

Amlwch are in 11th heaven after making it 11 games without defeat at the expense of a hard-working Llanystumdwy tonight.

Having only battled it out against the same opponents two weeks ago in a testing 3-1 win, Amlwch knew they were in for a tough match at Lon Bach.

Midweek matches are never easy with work commitments so many of the Town starting 11 were slightly out of their usual positions.

Despite this, Amlwch held possession and stayed solid in the defence and through the middle knowing which key Llan players they needed to keep out of the game.

The first half was pretty even with very few chances for both sides. Amlwch stayed defensive and did not let the visitors play football. The breakthrough finally came from an Ellie Jones whipped in corner on 30 minutes, Cara Williams heading home.

Amlwch held the lead throughout the rest of the first half, not managing to find a break through themselves against a very solid Llan defence.

In the second half Amlwch came out fighting again with players back in their usual positions, with lots of lovely through balls being played down the wings. Again the Llan defence was solid not letting their hosts find the back of the net.

However, on 62 minutes a lovely link up from Sara Furlong and Emily Ridges down the wing saw Ridges score from the edge of the box.

The rest of the game saw both teams trying to thread balls through to the forwards but with little success.

Llangefni Town 4 (Thomas 2, 1 pen, Cox, Coulson)
Denbigh Town 1 (Gunes)

Ffion Thomas (facing) scored twice

Llangefni’s attacking triumvirate of Cox, Thomas and Coulson all appeared on the scoresheet as the Anglesey side ended their home fixtures on a high note.

Jen Cox, Ffion Thomas and Ellie Coulson have netted 55 goals between them this term for a Cefni team which remain fourth in the North Wales Women’s League after completing a double over Denbigh.

The hosts took the lead on 15 minutes when Thomas proved to be her usual reliable self from the penalty spot, putting the islanders one-up.

Esra Gunes, Denbigh’s top-scorer this season, notched her seventh of the campaign with the equaliser on 26 minutes from a Charlotte Morris assist.

Llangefni were back in front on 39 when Cox banged in her 27th of the season – 25 in the league – following a Nia Ginnelly assist.

Llangefni took a big step towards the points when Coulson’s 13th goal this term made it 3-1 on 51 minutes.

Both sides made a number of substitutions before Thomas netted her 15th of the season with seven minutes left.
